2 out of 3 marriages end in divorce.

Without wanting to sound like Richie88, Im just going to loosely translate an article thats published today in the Danish newspaper Jyllands Posten:

    Marriage with fixed expiry date.
    By Henrik Vinther Olesen

Two thirds of all marriages between Danish men and Thai women gets dissolved again, often after the woman has gained permanent residency in Denmark.

Jyllands Posten has made a calculation of marriages made and dissolved between a Danish man and a Thai woman in the period between 2001-2006.
Everytime 100 marriages were entered into, 65 were dissolved. Which is more than 50% more than the average rate of marriages in general in Denmark.

Senior lecturer at Roskilde University Steen Baagøe Nielsen together with his colleague Thomas Gitz-Johansen have researched the subject of why some men choose to marry Thai women.
The research has shown that the man roughly fall into three categories:

The young that find a girlfriend on vacation or travel.

The little older ones with a broken marriage behind them and a wish for a more traditional gender role pattern.

The old, often pensioners, who find their wife on the beach in one of the popular thai vacation spots.

More of the little older ("Middle aged", I think is more appropiate designation)

The biggets group is likely the group of the middle aged who have had a relationship to Danish women and fall in love with the "foreign aspect".
Many meet in Denmark where already Danish-Thai married men introduce their friends to their wife's sister or cousin - says Steen Baagøe Nielsen.

Cand.Phil. Sine Plambech researched in Danish -Thai marriages and spent three months in a little village in the Isan-Province in North East Thailand, where arguably 95% of all Thaiwomen in Denmark hail from. She is not in doubt why the women choose Danish and other European men.

"It's a possibility to come to Denmark, and you cant stay in Denmark for more than 3 months if youre not married. From Denmark, they can send money home to the family and often the children, the Danish husband maybe never knew anything about, says Sine Plambech, who says she never met a Thai women who married a Danish man for love.

"Here not saying that it cannot lead to love. But the parties have a different view of what the relationship is built upon. One central point is that she is sending money home. These money come from the "shared income" says Sine Plambech and now reveals that reason these many marriages are dissolved.
"The man wishes a relationship between the two of them, while the woman has married to support her family in Thailand" says Sine Plambech, who believes that it isnt a coincidence that the amount of marriages declined leading up to the tightening of the rules for permanent residency.

    Surrounded by respect.

Alle foreigners who seeked permanemt residency after July 2002 should have been in Denmark for 7 years, compared to 3 years to fullfill the demands. In 2002 the number declied by a third compared to 2001, while the number in 2003 was quite a bit below half of the number in 2001.

But Steen Baagøe Nielsen warn against looking at the women as being cynical.

"Yes, it is the access to wealth, but the marriage is surrounded by respect. So even though many get a divorce, when they can get a permanent residency on their own, it is a loss of status and the meeting with a cold country, where not knowing the language almost certainly also plays into the equation" says Steen Baagøe Nielsen

100% accurate.... in my 2 year relationship with the TGF I can say that the only 'arguments' I have had with her have been about Mae and Peechai having an agenda on how they can 'interfere' with my plans ....... Also its not just a case of sending some baht back home to the family and keeping the TGF with you for an extended period. They want u to move to Thailand.
