Just to add for Dazza that Village marriage, or a Buddhistic ceremony, does not
help for legal purposes. Just in case you need a marriage certificate, you can
do this in 2 hours in BKK. It's very romantic

Okay, registering a buddhistic ceremony is as legally binding as a marriage in BKK Rak? Thought I have read a lot a about it 2 years ago, but that I don't recall. So do you get the exact same marriage certificate after registration of your buddhistic ceremony or just similar documentation which is sufficient for i.e. UK visas?
Damn, should go back to all the search functions, but well, I leave it here now ;-)

You also need a document that says you are not married in your home country.

And your birth certificate not older as 3 month as far as I recall.
Well, there was a lot of papers involved.
Good luck Dazza ;-)

As you're from the UK...
You take a freedom to marry document to the british embassy in BKK who will chop it (look on the consulate website for the example which you should produce).
No further evidence was required of you being single unless you have previously been divorced. Once complete, you take over the road to a translation office who will also get the official translation chopped at the thai ministry of foreign affairs (for an additional fee which is well worth it to avoid the taxi to cheng wattana and sitting around yourself).
You and the (soon to be missus) take this, passports, her tabien baan (house book), id card, etc to the amphur.
About 2 hours later and hey presto, you have a ball and chain.
We also took the marriage certificate to be translated and got this chopped by the thai ministry of foreign affairs also.
No issues with what visa you're on during your stay....

Do you also need that if it is only a "Buddha" wedding?

Budda weddings are not recognised in the UK as legal. If you wish to marry under UK law you must attend an Ampur which is very straightforward details are on the British Embassy but il start a thread.

Thanks Azzzey, but for me a UK wedding is not relevant. I know that a Buddha wedding has no legal importance. The Ampur procedure is know to me.
As a Dutch citizen, you need all those papers and on top of that the Dutch embassy in Bangkok has to issue a "competance of marriage certificate". This serves to goals in random order: generating money and a possibillity to avoid fake-weddings in order to obtain residence permits more easy.
My questions relating to a Buddha wedding is if you, as farang, need some special document allowing you to be one of the main rol characters.

Well, I'm confused now myself, the viking threw me of my boat.
I had no idea and to my knowledge a Buddha wedding doesn't bring you to
the UK, but when he mentioned he did that and registered this (is that the
registration at amphor (spelling;-)) in bkk?) I'm not sure about it at all now.
Maybe he could explain in more detail what exactly he did.

Confused i am ?
What exactly are we talking about here ?
Are you saying you want to do a Budda wedding ?
Yes if so just do it but its not legal!
If you wish to marry & do a visa application look on your Embassys website.
LOL

ok first of i think you have mis understood me.
1)the Bhuddist wedding does not mean a thing legally or for a visa as stated.
2)the amphur wedding is the same a register office in your home country and makes your wedding legal and binding.
my comments were refering to how drab these said offices are considering your commiting yourself to each other etc.
yes you do have to obtain an affirmation of freedom to marry.
my own advice would be that once you obtain it from your embassy when you go to get it translated i would also let them use one of their runners to go across Bangers to the national office.while you sit back with a cold beer.
we did it all ourselves and ok it was no hard ship but it was time i could of spent else where instead of sitting on the sky train ,then a taxi ,waiting in the office(even though we paid for the express service so heaven knows how long you would wait normally)and traveling back again.
we also submitted our visa application before we were married but we did state our wedding day.i then had to fly back to the uk for buisness.if i had checked my e-mail before leaving Bangers i would have seen that the visa applications had been approved pending the marriage certificate.
from submitting the application to approval took about two days ,so fair play to the British Embassy on that.
