Western Union
Had a few problems with Western Union.
I am not sponsoring my special lady, buts its her birthday so i thought i would send her a little something ( 5000 baht ) , not much , but just because i want to .
Anyway , i registered with western union and sent the money . Everything went as it should, i received the confirmation E-mail and called the number for authoristion.
I gave my lady the code and she went to get the money. However, they wouldn't give it to her because they said she was in the wrong country ?
I had called them that morning and asked if she needed my full name and address to receive the money, as i was a bit dubious about giving my address . They advised that some branches do require this.
It turns out that when i had called , the western union employee had been working on another transaction at the same time , and had mixed the two up and sent my money to America and not Thailand .
It is now resolved (only after several phone calls ), but it was quite worrying, as when i first called to query what had happened , i was told that i had made a call that day requesting that the money be sent to America and not Thailand. So i was thinking somebody had obtained my details and some kind of credit card theft had occurred.
So now i have lost all confidence in Western union , and am wondering if there is a better way in future, should i decide to send some money again ????

perhaps next time you are in thailand, you could open a bank account and give her a card to access the account, thus paying telegraphic transfer fees when you deposit money into it in the uk.
or open an account in the uk, and give her the atm card for it, but make sure you tell the bank it will be used in nakon nowhere or phuket.
these methods i think are more suitable for the long term sponsorship kind of thing, not just the one offs or buffalo is sick occaisions.

I always use Western Union, it's very easy and reliable. Best to create an online account and transfer the money yourself.
They got a very user friendly website.
It happens that for the first transitions, you have to call back and authorize, but for future transitions, you can send 500
Pound at a time.
Conversion rates are not bad, only thing is quite high transfer costs/fees.
So, the relative high transfer fee for only 5000 Baht is a waste of money really, you would have been better advised to send more
to make it worthwhile.
Especially since you now already on the WesternUnion route and your special lady knows about it, it doesn't matter anymore ;-)))

555, its funny because no matter how many threads and posts i read , warning people not to send money and about the fact that your girl will be up to this and that , i just couldn't help myself !!!
I know full well that she works in a bar and will have many customers before i next see her. But that it her job, and at the moment doesnt bother me. I can not expect her to do anything else unless i became a 'full on' sponsor, which i am not about to do anytime soon.
At the moment though , she is still my 'special lady' , so a little treat for her birthday was in order. If she now starts asking me for money she will have a shock because i haven't got any !!!
Western Union did charge more than 15% commission for the transfer , which is alot. If i still feel like giving her some money at the time of my next trip in January i think the ATM card for her, suggestion is a good one.

If you are going to send money even every now and then try Ikobo money tranfser. It's cheap ($5.00 to per load) and your party can get the money at any ATM. The inital setup is a bit of a pain but easy after that. https://www.ikobo.com/

i just looked up interflora website and booked through there, but had to really make sure the address and other details were correct, even then it took the element of suprise out of it as the courier phoned the wife too make sure he could find her house, less of problem in patong i think.
mind you on 2 ocaisions i sent flowers it was the same courier and the second time he didnt have to phone ahead to find the house he remembered it.
white rose bkk, i think was the firm, not cheap but apparently the flowers were perfect.
if i had been in locale, a bear from tesco/big c and some flowers from the early morning local flower market would have done the job.
