A girl at my local bar in lala tells me she wants to be my gik I am not up for GF having finished a month a go with my ex. Does this mean she wants a phone a friend to keep her warm at night or is this about being mates going to the movies friends only etc I like the idea of that, does anyone have a gik whether in a relationship or not. Some of my local Thai friends have giks mostly they sleep with them there doesn't seem to be any financial arrangement.

A Gik is just a "friend with benefits", if theres no sex and you hang out etc their just a normal friend....if she is to be a true Gik then yeh no money should be involved....also she shouldnt get pissy if you have other giks, barfines whatever.

Intersting ok maybe she also means a gik leading into a BF/GF relationship the day after she asked me if I was butterfly she knows I've been shagging a girl at the Blackcat bar. While I am on the subject of this buterfly saying it gives me the shites how can I be a butterfly if I am single and sleep around I thought it was only tagged if you had a GF and where slutting on the side

The butterfly analogy is just that you 'flit from pretty flower to pretty flower' without any attachments.

Note when Thais talk about a Gik for Thai / Thai its usually not meaning P4P more fcukbuddy.. But on Bangla with a farang gik its 'adapted' to the environment

I get the idea that with a Gik relationship there is usually a BF or husband involved that is being cheated on or is being kept out of the frame.
My ex called me her Gik because she had to sneak around so her 17yo son wouldn't find out.

BANGKOK: -- While most people in committed relationships demand faithfulness from their partner, a recent survey has found that a number of them cheated - or are still cheating - on their significant other.

Of the 1,480 people aged 18 and older who were polled, about 40 per cent said they had had one or more romantic relationships with people other than their spouse or committed partner.

Nearly 40 per cent of these unfaithful partners said they were still cheating on their partners.

"We are concerned that having 'giks' [casual affairs] will become something common," said Noppadon Kannika, head of the Assumption University's Social Innovation in Manage-ment and Business Analysis Research Centre, yesterday.

The centre conducted the survey on October 9 and 10 in Bangkok and nearby provinces in a bid to explore why people cheat on their partners.

According to the survey, women's fussiness, men's incompetence, family conflicts and loneliness are among the main reasons why people are unfaithful. Pursuit of sexual pleasure, the desire to prove one's sexual appeal, and stress were also cited as reasons.

Some 87 per cent of respondents said they heard about extramarital relationships and casual lovers from news reports.

Noppadon voiced concern over the finding that the respondents tended to consider these casual relationships - known as "giks" in Thai - common.

However, when asked what they would do if they found out that their partner had cheated on them, more than 85 per cent said they would not be able to accept it.

Asked about their reaction to the recent scandal over a top official at the Social Development and Human Security Ministry having extramarital affairs with subordinates, 76 per cent said their trust in the ministry had diminished.

More than half of those polled wanted government agencies, non-governmental organisations, politicians, Cabinet members, businessmen, actors, actresses and singers to campaign against unfaithfulness.

"We are also concerned that people who should be role models in society, like politicians, high-ranking government officials and celebrities, are often seen as unfaithful to their partners," Noppadon said.

My understanding of 'gik' is a casual lover for a married Thai guy or lady. A female gik would be an unpaid lover in the arrangement. A male gik would be paid for his services in many occasions by the thai lady who was just looking for casual $ex, not too much different from being a male pro$titute.

This differs when the term is applied to a farang, I think it means a regular $ex partner that has no call on you, is willing to allow you to continue seeing others. In reality this situation is rare as they usually move from gik status to gf in their own minds.

If you get it right, and I do know of a few such relationships, then it is a girl who will ring you or is willing to sleep with you when you ring them, for nothing more then mutual satisfaction.

Tony, I do not think it originates from gig, as in the musical term, however it could be phonetically spelt like that as depending on your accent, that is how it could be pronounced.

I think this is my situation she's looking for BF I was hoping for something with less commitment
