All Black + The Haka

I was just wondering about your thoughts on whether or not the ABs should be allowed to do the Haka before International Rugby matches......and does it give them an unfair advantage in psyching out their opponents???

It would seem that the new Haka which now includes a gesture of running he thumb accross the throat in an obvious throat slitting gesture (despite what the ABs team + management are saying to the contrary) is quite inflamatory

I of course love the Haka and the feeling of the hair raising on the back of the kneck however i imagine for the rest of the world this could seem quite intimidating??.....so I am not so sure about the new version (with the thumb gesture)

Why not, they should be allowed to go for it. I love watching it, and all other sports teams that play them know all too well about it.

I think it's a fantastic spectacle, long may it continue. I'm not convinced that it does anything to the opposition, they must have seen it all before.

Glad to see these positive response from the Steves.......................

I think that it would be a tragedy for Rugby and its traditions if a few boring old farts had their way and banned it........ as is some of the talk in the press here today......... claiming that reports out of England haveThe English RU less than pleased about the new version and see it as an open "threat/taunt" to the opposition from the ABs............

Nice to see you back Stevem...........been away??

Talking

I think the Haka is an important part of international rugby, however I would like to see other sides being allowed to respond. For example, if I was ever captain of the England rugby team I would push make a response and that would be to line up against your opposite number, shake their hand and whilst saying in a very British stiff upper lip accent "may the best team win old boy !!"

That would be a great spectacle Jonny..........and if they get really pumped they might even move their arms??????........

Are people in Ireland still talking about THAT tackle...........I was there at the match and it looked pretty bad to me.......and hasn't looked any better on replays????

I think O'Driscoll is a fantastic player..........he'd be one of the first chosen in my World 15

I seem to remember a team did line up to them a few years ago (Ireland maybe???). Looked like they were facing up to them. There was criticism that this was inflammatory, but I thought it was all part of the game. Some excellent facial expressions on the Kiwis and if they were just a few yards away from me, I'd probably do a Dawsey.

That was England Gez Richard Cockerill the ****** was almost in the face of the front Kiwi doing the Haka . A bit confrontational I suppose but his way of dealing with it.
I'm all for the Haka. Its part and parcel of the entertainment and these seasoned internationals don't worry about it.
The Samoan ceremony is very similar.

David Campese answered it best by turning his back on them, walking down to the try line and totally ignoring them ! I always wondered why opposition teams just stand there and not react ! Has to be politics!!

Whats to react to?? If other teams had a 'thing' to do, well they could also do it before a match, but they dont. Doesnt mean a team that has a 'thing' shouldnt be allowed to do it, and they should be respected whilst they do it. Turning your back and walking away is just ignorant and rude.

Not really it just his way of doing his 'thing in reply to their 'thing. You like it and I hate it and that's where I'll leave it. Besides, Campo was a rude bastard anyway, but was a great player !

I agree with Jaws, it was "his thing" and he should be allowed to do it - your words not mine.

100% with you.

If the team facing you just beat all 4 "home" nations, that's intimidating. The dance doesn't come into it.

Mind you, I would hate to see the Scottish Rugby team doing a full highland fling in kilts on a windy day

We'd do what they did in Brave Heart , turn around, lift the kilts , and show them the "Ancient Scottish Brown Eye "

Absolutely agreed ;it's part of the excitement of Rugby; and the Samoans do a similar tribal tour de force.
