I watched the last World Cup (the one England won, remember?) in Patong and the ABs did it to themselves as well. They just never turned up against Australia. They seem very, very different now and I don't see them making that mistake again. They don't look beyond the next game, the only opponent to be beaten is the one in front of them.
France would do well to learn from that, but I'm not convinced that they can. I can't see them sustaining a run over a long period like England did, they have never gotten beyond being Mavericks, brilliant one weekend (or half) and awful the next. Long may it continue!

French teams over the years have always reminded me of David Campese: capable of brilliant moves and a guaranteed match winner - if only you could be certain which team they were going to win it for.

I remember that game Nelsonone 1999 semi-final wasn't it,France well down at half time and played possibly the best second half any team has ever had in the World Cup. Finished about 43-29 didn't it.

Quite true Steve. Remember the French of the late 80's through to late 90's.
Only had to wind them up,stand up to their pack and they would gift you penalties to win the matches.
They have got rid of that mindset, but its hard to explain their mentality not to be able to sustain a winning run like past World Cup winners.
And on the subject of the World Cup, I know its a long time since NZ won it ('88), but they should have won in 95 when they were by far the best team,Lomu at his peak, and SA won after a freak rainstorm. And again in '99 they were on course to meet the Aussies but for that French display.
Its not always the best team that wins it. England should have won it in '92 but changed their gameplan from forward domination and paid the price.

I think the Kiwis will have the last laugh there Dawsey. They are surely favourites going into 2007, and with home advantage in 2011 would you bet against them to win it and then retain it?
Of course, all England need to do in order to rain on that parade is win in France 2007...

I can't see England beating NZ next year, and NOBODY will stop them in 2011

Good memory Dawsey..............I can't remember the score but I think you are right...........I've blocked it out of memory I think.....the pain was too great...........and yes France deserved their win that day.......i must admit that the ABs have choked on a couple of occasions at WC level.........the other famous one was against AUS as Steve also mentions above in the last RWC........now that one hurt as apart from the loss I was living in AUS at the time and really copped it from all of my AUS mates........so yeah I always worry about them living up to their form in between at RWCs???????
The loss in SA was another story with half of the ABs team coming down with an accute dose of the shi'ites.........apparently this was attributed to a waitress at the hotel who put something in the tea???......now I know that this sounds like an excuse but they certainly were sick boys on game day....if it is true it was a geat travesty of justice
Anyway......good luck for the 6 Nations boys.......I got some good odds late last year on England so I'm England all the way on this one.........looking at $NZ500 if they win in a clean sweep...........this is about 10 quid..........55555

Spectacular own goal by the Welsh here, it should do wonders for their 6 Nations campaign...

Yep, very strange timing to quit
If family is being used as a reason to get out, then he should have seen it through until the end of the 6 Nations next month.
I smell a rat.

Here we go again:
Scotland v England: I say England win in a squeaker. Evenly matched up front but England have a bit too much in the backs and will win it in the last quarter. 29-20 or so.
France v Italy: France at a canter but not before the Italian pack have introduced themselves. Even at half time and then France by at least 30 points (I hope I'm wrong with this one )
Ireland v Wales: Ireland for me, O'Driscoll is back and Wales are tearing themselves apart. Thomas is out with a headache, the best coach they have ever had has quit and the players seem to be picking the team, crazy. Wales had best watch out for a very hungry Italian side who are tired of getting stuck with the wooden spoon.
I'm looking forward to the rugby this weekend. I had a chance at tickets for Murrayfield, but they are £90 each and the trip is epic. I hope I don't regret turning them down

I think Steve is correct on all 3 results although I see Italy v France as a bit closer. Italy will again trouble the opposing forwards.
England will win this one fairly easily in the end I fancy. The Scots pack is not as good as Englands, and the backs are nowhere near as good. Playing at Murrayfield though will even things out a little. I expect England to win by 15-20points.
Ireland v Wales looks the pick. Both badly need the win and Wales are in self destruct. Losing G Thomas is another blow but losing the coach even bigger.
Ireland to win, but not by much for me.

I still go Ireland IJ, maybe by a single score, but I think they have it.
The scotlnad player who got sent off might have made the biggest mistake of his career. Wales were there to be had, and Scotland could have been in for their best 6 nations in a long time.

Well played Scotland, they even looked really dangerous on the few occassions they did spin the ball out along the line.
England were bad, well below par and they did not play the right tactics.
Not once did they try to a small "grubber" kick through or chip over the Scottish defence. With so much possession they should also have kept turning Scotland around and putting them back into the corners as well.
England winning the next world cup ?? Forget it !!

Well played the Scots
Better team on the day, made fewer mistakes and their defence were superb.
England made far too many handling errors, too many turnovers and just got caught by a very good and determined Scottish team.
Last time I forecast a result I think.
