Rugby - 6 Nations
Italy v Ireland just kicked off; I take Ireland by 30 points in this one. Good to see O'Driscoll back, and the way Munster and Leinster played in the Heineken cup I take Ireland as my dark horses for the tournament too.
England v Wales later today; England by 20+, Wales are short of players this time and won't get the ball to their scintillating backs in so much space.
Scotland's tournament will, once again, revolve around their game against Italy. They seem to be improving, but not quickly enough and so are Italy.
My Prediction:
1 England
2 France
3 Ireland
4 Wales
5 Scotland
6 Italy

Ireland v Italy is 10-10 at half time, a 30 point win would be a surprise now

England v Wales
A super show from England that destroyed Wales.
Forward game overpowered Wales and this time the backs got some good ball.
I know Wales were missing some key players, but this was a great win against the Grand Slam holders.
Charlie Hodgson is playing so well that JW is not being missed at all,in fact, he will have a job to regain his place.
I'm sure any All Blacks fans watching would have approved of the all round show today. The big test will be France in Paris.
Final score England 47 Wales 13
Earlier,Ireland did not impress me against an improving Italty.

Accepted wisdom seems to be France at the mo, and for me that will be the game of the tournament. Whoever wins the England v France will go through the tournament unbeaten.
Italy were very hard done by today, Ireland were well rattled and could very easily have got beat. There was a lot of 'footwork' in the rucks from Ireland, they were very frustrated but probably just worth the win. A real surprise.

But what about the Ire try that never was? could have been a different game if they weren't awarded that one.

Yep, clearly held up, but as their coach said afterwards if the ref had not blown up then the player may have grounded it in the wrestling match anyway, so who knows? As I said, Italy were hard done to from where I was sitting

The ref screwed that one up! The guy was clearly held up and looked to be his back so trying to ground it would have been a double motion wouldn't it? Ref seemed to be in a rush to give the try. It's them little things that change games, one team gains confidence and the other loses theirs.
Italy were impressive and I reckon they'll get at least one victory, although I've not checked the fixtures to see if they are playing Scotland or Wales at home. Reckon they might have one or the other.

The way Wales played today I would think that Italy will be a worry to them. I do agree though, the ref had a bit of a shocker today.

Beat me to it, a fantastic display which stands the whole tournament on it's head. I'm sure Scotland will be eager to get stuck into the English now, and I'm retiring from predicting results as of now!
Well done Scotland, brilliant rugby.

Great win to Scotland..............all kilt wearers take a bow!.......sorry but Scotland will only finish MID table....
As discussed some time ago on the board.......France doesn't have the consistency to turn up with their A game in each of the big matches of the tournament.....but who'd a thought this result......I'm happy!!!
Great win to England................stilll my favourites as previously predicted but France is still their main concern as France host the match this year and will be stung by the crap result against Scotland......France can still beat anyone on their day......but I'm thinking clean sweep to England
Dawsey and Steve...........you guys must be happy......they look good and even Charlie's picked up the pace and giving good service to the backs who are running well....forwards won them the match tho'...........
Wales............mid table...
Ireland...........forget em.....what about O'Driscolls brain fart.....shoulda been sent off
Italy..............improving but still just making uo the numbers
Super 14 stars this weekend......tune in for the entertainment

The Scotland result plays into England's hands. I said England for the tournament and stand by that.
I still think that the English tight 5 are the best in the world at the mo (sorry NelsonOne) and that should be enough to strangle France, I hope so. It favours England now because they have got the Welsh out of the way, and there will be a Welsh backlash; someone will cop that, and they have Italy to fine tune their game before the Scotland and France crunches.
I really don't want to say 'I told you so' about Charlie Hodgson, but I told you he was good...

Good one steve...........enjoy the mo of that win........it was a great start and sets you up nicely for a grand slam
and I probably agree about the tight 5............perhaps even the whole pack........although the AB's are not struggling in that department..............with a lot more options than England have if injuries come into play around world cup time
I will eat some humble pie on Charlie...a bit of crust maybe....as he is getting better with serving his backs.............but I still don't see him really as world class yet like a Carter, MacAllistair, Larkham, Giteau or even Michelak.........he is still a fraction slow for my liking and can be put under enormous pressure by good loosies (not Josh) and half backs...........I wouldn't be worrying about Johnnie as a back up.....look to a younger player and get him some game time against Italy, Ireland and Scotland......even if its just 5 minutes
Oh.......almost forgot........good to see big Larry D back in the no8 now that Sir Wanker has buggered off....he was your next best in winning WC after Big Marty.........he adds a shit load of steel and authority at the back

Charlie Hodgson is not a Dan Carter or a Michelak, but I do think he is Englands best 10 at the moment. And the way England play, cagey and going through phases, strong defensively with a couple of big lumpy centres, he is perfect back there.
I hope England do give some game time to others too, Andy Goode for one, and I believe Olly Barkley would get the inside centre spot but for injury and force Noon or Tindall onto the bench.
Ben Cohen is not at his best either, and I would love to see Varndell or Voyce given a start out there.
A good start to the tournament for us, and not just because of the England result.

Very patriotic quote and whilst as another Englishman I would like to agree, I can't help feeling that NZ produces world class locks (2nd row forwards) consistently, who are not only good ball players, but nasty b*stards who get in and mix it with anyone, i.e. take no nonsense. SA, Aus (John Eales especially) and France also turn out some seriously good locks as well.
Why was Martin Johnson so good ? He spent time playing in NZ for a while and came back a much better player. Grewcock, Shaw and Borthwick are good solid international players but would never make it in to my "world 15".
As a tight 5 unit taken as one, i.e. compared to the tight 5's of other countries, then yes maybe they are tops at present.

Well here we go again. A good game for England to learn a bit more about some backs combinations this weekend. Italy will test them, and that tight 5 will get roughed up, but I can't see anything but an England win.
Tome Voyce is in for Lewsey, and I really hope Simpson-Daniel gets some game time too. No start for Dallaglio but Worsley and Moody on the flanks. A mean pack that will have way too much for Italy.
Wales Scotland should be a cracker - Scotland are playing with belief and Wales will be stung by last weekend. Too close to call for me (go on then; Wales by a single score)
France will be humiliated by last week and itching to put it right, Ireland need to bring their 'A' game and it was nowhere near last week. France at a canter (15 points)

Got to go with your summing up for this weekends games Steve.
Wales v Scotland should be the best one and I have to go with your assessment and would say that home advantage will sway it for Wales.
Mind you Welsh pack will have to stop those Scots forwards or their backs won't see too much ball. Even so the Welsh backs are far superior to the Scots. A close call.
England,a tough match for the forwards but an easy England win,and by up to 30 points at least.
France won't play as badly again surely! I reland will be beaten up front, their forwards are ageing and France have a great pack. France by 20 points for me

What about Preston Grasshoppers v Blackpool (Under 15s)?
Frankly, I think 'hoppers have got too much and our lads are in for a tough time, but I can't tell the boy that can I? (Hoppers by 20+)

two serious errors by Ireland, two tries to France in 7 minutes, its not a canter, its a grim start I say France by 30 points.

Yes they done us proud, Thought we were in for a right thrashing, But they showed a lot of fighting spirit to come back from 43 - 3
And could have even snatched it in the end, Fair play to them..
