sport rivalries?

i thought this would be interesting, and obviuosly, we will get tons of different answers in different sports:

in the states i think the biggest rivalries are:

boston red sox vs new york yankess, pro baseball
north carolina tar heels vs duke blue devils, college basketball

theres a bunch more but i think these two stand above all else

College football has a lot

Yale vs. Harvard
Miami vs. Florida and Florida State
Oklahoma vs. Nebraska
Texas vs. Oklahoma
USC vs. UCLA
and many more.

Sure that we will get some answers from the soccer(european football) and rugby crowd.

In sport, England are the ones to be shot down in any event by every country. I don't know why.

Our biggest rivalries are in football (soccer)
Arsenal v Tottenham
Liverpool v Man United
and Man City v Man United are probably the biggest.

Australia are probably Englands biggest rivals in sport.

I have no love for either glasgow celtic or glasgow rangers but this is the biggest and most hate filled derby match in european soccer, i have attended several of these games and you can smell the hatred and venom in the air, NORMAL people are afraid to go out in the streets of Glasgow when these 2 teams play. several players who have played in other derby matches roy keane, trevor steven, henrik larson,AND fRANNIE JEFFERS will all confirm my opinion

For me looking at this from outside it looks like "The Old Firm" is the most emotional fight.

Remember i read about Neil Lennon and his problems and it says a lot.

Glasgow is a strange place, and the 'Old Firm' games must be fearsome. I am Manchester born and Red by fortune, but the hatred that is obvious between Liverpool and Manchester baffles me. There has to be more to life than football?

I went to a local Sheffield Derby one year in the eighties.......Wednesday vs United

I couldn't believe what I was seeing on the way in.......there were fights everywhere with mounted cops trying to break them up but the funniest thing I ever saw in a fight was these two guys trying to throw punches at each others heads despite being separated by a vertical steel rod fence..........the gap was barely big enough to get a fist through so all they did was punch the fence......their hands were bleeding to buggery but they kept at it ???????????

I've seen smarter Siamese fighting fish than this............which is yet another great sports rivalry!!!!!

Yes and its al over Europe and it make me lost a lot of the interest to.
But cred to the US it looks like their fights are at the field and not among the
audience and the events are more a family thing over there.

Celtic v Rangers !!!! Dear Lord, time to be off the streets I would say.. Not only a football match but a religious sectarian divide disguised as a football match..

I went to The Celtic Club in Melbourne last year to watch the Celtic V Rangers game.....it was about 11pm local time....l could not believe the intense hatred of anything blue amongst that crowd....it was amazing.....was about a 500 people there as well....Celti c won thank goodness ...then lost the Championship in the dying minutes of the season

My house mate is an absolute nutter who likes a wind up.. He will regularly wear blue and go to a celtic bar singing 'the bluebells are blue' or orange into a rangers bar just cause he is a rogue..

His broken nose tells a few stories also..

I was in Belfast in the late 1970's with the army , we had to do security outside the local football ground. The teams playing were Cliftonville and Linfield , coach loads of "fans" came over from Glasgow , it made a Celtic - Rangers game look like a picnic !!!!!

Imagine an "Old Firm" game where you not only had to look out for hooligans , but also had to watch out for snipers.

I must admit, I've gotten a little tired of the football nonsense over the last couple of years. To me, the biggest deal is the Man U v Liverpool games, and both sets of 'fans' leave nothing unsaid, real sick stuff about Munich and Heysel.

We go to rugby these days and the atmosphere in the ground is such a contrast: no segregation, women and kids all around the place, beer deliveries, it couldn't be more civilised.

From what I've seen the Argentinian derby match between Boca Juniors and River Plate is as intense as they come.

One of those must see before you die type of games, would love to go except that it regularly turns very nasty with shootings inside the ground!
