I think for Toni to really have a chance to become top scorer, he will have to do a solanko and score 5/6 in one game. As I can't see the Italians getting very far due to their VERY VERY TRIED AND TESTED DEFENCE! I think they will suffer against quick forward and late breaking midfielders.
I think that The Czech's will win the group, and then the Italians will go out against the mighty Brazilains!
Of course may be wrong!

I thought Thierry Henry is in such sparkling form that maybe he could win top goal scorer at 12/1 (Oz market)...with 20baht on Dwight Yorke at 250/1 (an old fav)...that would win me 5 ST's
Also do not read too much into an England B defeat....wait till the real stuff starts.
Went to Australia V Greece last night....95,000 people there.....game as pretty sedate...no player wants to get injured with the World Cup only days away.

Sports Talk > England's World Cup Campaign
What about Raul he gone play against Saudi ,Tunisia
and Ukraine in the group play.
He could do at least 4 goals there
And Spain would normally win that group and then he have the quarter to put some
Germany is little funny they have Ballack as their
top scorer with 30 Int goals
And they have Poland,Costa Rica and Ecuador to
waltz over.Maybee we gone see a new Gert Muller in Miroslav Klose, and maybee he would be able to do 4 or 5 in the group play

Klose finished top scorer in the bundesliga and can score goals for fun. Raul on the other hand is well overrated. Dont expect to much from him. He hasnt played well for a few years. Raul of old would have scored goals for fun. Shevchenko if he is fit enough could be someone to look out for. Should be able to score a few against the saudis and tunisia and depending on what spain turn up. The spain that can defend and play really good football or the spain who cant do nothing.

See thats were our opinions differ, I have loved the Czechs over the last few years but they look like they are in decline, On the other hand if you have watched the Italians progress over the last while, They have been coming on leaps and bounds, They look as strong as ever, And I think they will go all the way to the final.. Only thing I am worried about is whether all the match fixing allegations over the last couple of months are gonna affect the team spirit, I hope not...
PS: I understand what you are saying about the ageing defence, But you just have to look at AC Milan which most of them play for, And over the last two seasons they have gone all the way in the Italian league, And onto the finals and semi-finals of the Champions league respectively which is no mean feat, Only to lose out to the eventual winners by a slender margain, That is not the sign of a bad defence
We will find out soon enough who is closest with there predictions, Will be a laugh to look back and see how right or how badly wrong we have been with our predictions....55555555..

Van Nistleroy May be a problem! I think he might be the only one left in the squad with a big EGO!

Rising star Dirk Diggler ...... 5555555.
If you already placed your bet, I hate to be the bringer of bad news, but it looks like Dirk Diggler will be having a warm spot on the bench.
Kuyt is originally a centre forward and it seems Van Basten will play Robin van Persie instead as a real winger. Van Nistelrooij is (still) number one upfront. Robben will be playing on the other side, which will hopefully give 'Billy' Van Nistelrooij 'the Kid' some good shooting practise in the middle
In theory it looks pretty good on paper.
Seems like your Boogie Night star has to be patient
P.S. As the Dutch are a little bit spoiled upfront, maybe Erikson can borrow Roy Makaay. We don't need him.

England's World Cup Campaign
Ref Info WC webside
Quote:
If their performance in qualifying is anything to go by then Portugal must rank as credible contenders at the 2006 FIFA World Cup™ finals. Luiz Felipe Scolari’s side won nine of their 12 matches, finishing seven points clear of their closest rivals Slovakia, and scoring more goals than any other team in Europe.
If the statistic of 35 goals scored and just five conceded was impressive, then so too was the contribution of striker Pauleta whose eleven goals not only put him at the top of the continental scorers’ chart but also took him past the legendary Eusebio’s record of 41 for his country.
|
Pauleta’s record speaks for itself.
Maybee you have a point IJ

Portugal seems to be an easy scoring team and I have to agree Pauletta might be a good gamble. Especially if you see what group they are in. Portugal, Angola, Iran and Mexico. It just don't seems fair.
There is the group of death, so what's this group called .... the 'sanuk' group.

The only thing is tho pauletta can score goals but what about when portugal play the big teams? Also look back to 2002 when portugal did naff in the group stages. Portugal is another team that can either play lovely football or play well just plain naff a bit like Spain. It will depend on what there mentality is when they play.

The same thing always happens when Portugal reach the tournament finals, imho! Like Euro 2004, I could see them at least reaching the Semi's (Being host nation) and even had a bet on them to win it, but I couldn't think of any one of their players who would score more than 2 or 3 at max. They seem to win games but the goals are spread throughout the side. No player looks like bagging a hatrick!
With Pauletta, I have another problem too. He just doesn't to me look like a international forward. He scores goals for fun in league football! But against man-markers he stuggles! Thats why (I hear) no Italian side was ever interested in him. Nuno Gomes looks like a more dangerous forward in internationals!
Now watch him bag the golden boot!???

Its ok!
I have arranged for some friends to visit the HORSE and make an offer he can't refuse! So expect him to pull out before the WC starts!
But that said, I think The DIGGLER (As he will be refered to as, from now on!) is a much better Target man than the Horse will ever be. So if Van Basten is half a good a manager as he was a player, then DIGGLES will start the first group game up front!

Pauletta scored 3 goals against the mighty Cape Verde Islands tonight in a trashing 4-1 win. Not sure if Nuno Gomes played.

I still think Klose will be a good bet. Dont know the odds but with his scoring record this season for Werder Bremen and the fact he will be playing on home soil and Ballack supplying home cant be a bad bet. Germany should have a good run. Looks a good bet in theroy.

I think Germany are in with a big shout; they are always good and are at home this time. The trouble is that, as an English bloke, I can't really be predicting Germany as winners, or Argentina

Same here with me!
I can't be seen by the lads placing bets on "The Enemy". But as im only half(ish) English, I might be able to place half the original bet on them!
SO i have been trying to place a small e/w bet on an Argentian player called R. Palacio, as he scored a hatrick the other night, but cant seem to find a online bookie to take the bet! Damn!
He's at 16/1 just to be the Argies top scorer. So to win the golden boot he must be alot higher!

Yeah i dont think there'd be any Englishmen who wouldnt be crying in2 their beer if the Argies progress further than us.It took me months to get over 98 when D.B. got sent off and then we lost on penalties, infact in writing this i realise im still not over it,sad sad day that was.The highlight of 2002 had to be when we sent them packing.yeeeeeeeeeeeee hoooooooooooooooo...Its been really interesting following the build up from Australia now we've got a team in.Over 90,000 fans at a friendly against Greece last week brilliant stuff.Who knows,in another 8 or 12 years Australia might be right up there,as we are in the rugby and cricket..

Australia have a good team. They have been unlucky not to qualify for the last 2 world cups. I am hoping they can get out of the group phases.
And yes as an Englishman you cant be seen dead cheering on the enemy. Thing was after Beckham was sent off i thought we still played really well and really the red should never have been given. Yellow would have been more just and a yellow to Diego Simione for his theatrical dive. Argentina got lucky but really that game will be remembered for Michael Ownes amazing goal.

I'm sure there were a lot there to see Greece though? Does'nt Oz have the biggest Greek population outside Greece? | |
