talk about being adored. They still loved him even after he came to US to make some money.

He was great but i think the years in Napoli did distroy him,to close connections with bad people And he ended up dependent on drugs.
The sad thing is that many remember him from WC 86 as a cheater where he scores the famous goal with the "Hand of God" and then scores a magnificent second goal winning 2-1 against England in the quarter-finals of the world cup in Mexico. Leads Argentina to the triumph defeating West Germany 3-2 in the final.
But beside Pele maybee the greatest fotballer ever?

Good an&lysis Petter. That 2nd goal in the WC86 will go down as possibly the best ever. Maradona is the pick of a lot of fans for No1 greatest player ever, but Pele still was the best IMO.

Funny storie about Pele:In Nigeria a two-day truce was declared in the war with Biafra so that both sides could see him play. The Shah of Iran waited three hours at an airport just to speak with Pele. A survey in the early 1970s showed that the name Pele ranked behind only Coca-Cola as the most popular brand in Europe ,and When a reporter asked if his fame compared to that of Jesus Christ's, Pele replied, "There are parts of the world where Jesus Christ is not so well known."
During his career, he scored 1,280 goals in 1,360 games

Ah, the good ol’ Pele vs. Maradona discussion. For me, being simply too young to have followed Pele throughout his career, it will always be Maradona.
I always thought it a big loss to the tournament when he failed the drug-test in the US 94 WC. I really thought he could’ve had a real comeback when he scored that goal in the early stages (against who?).
Anyway, usually more heart than sense in these discussions. As to great players, I’d go with Socrates. Hey, he smoked a pack a day and still performed pretty darn decent...

There have allways been top ones, but top of the top was Pele. In Europe you had Eusebio (during a WC, I think 1966, they were so afraid of him that they torpedoed him and he couldn't play any more). Maradona was OK, but so was Cruyf, Platini, Zidane and a few others.
But there is only one Pele.

I saw maradonna play on tv but i was quite young then.... Was it usa 94 when he got sent home because he was tested for drugs and they found some in his blood... Was such a waste that bloke was great... being a Chelsea fan when i use to see Zola play he always reminded me of him a little.. When Zola was young he was understudy to Maradonna when they were at Napoli... Fantastic player

Not a fan personally, another who tossed away an immense talent in the same way George Best did (and Gasgoigne to an extent).
I suppose, as has been said, that he will be more remembered for the 'Hand of God' goal than any of the others. A fairly fitting tribute to the guy I think.

Agree totally....easily the best player l have seen....his domination of the 1986 WC is something l will never forget....almost a one man WC.
Obviously off field he don't come close the high esteem Pele is rightly held in.

to be honest its mainly only in England that he is remembered for the Hand of God goal, more than anything else.which is fair enough since he scored it against them.
In the Latin countries he is rememebered for alot more other Fantastic goals, such as the one against Belgium in the semi final of the 86 world cup or the second goal against England in the quarter final.Of course the Hand of God is still talked about!
Also I dont think He through away his career as much as Best or Gascoigne.Best was finished top class football by the age of 27, Gascoigne never really acheived what he could have.Maradona won more trophies than the two of them combined. Also he palyed in the world cup final in 1990 at the age of 30, it was only really after that ,that it went bad
I think he is the greatest ever, with Pele second, since He took an average bunch of players to the World cup final twice.Won countless honours with Napoli ,who were a pretty crap team before he went there, winning the League there twice.Whereas Pele has a group of world class players around him the whole time, and only played his club football in Brazil,in a league which was recognized as not being as stong as the European leagues at that time.
that being said my top 3 of all time would be
Maradona
Pele
cruyff
just my 2 cents worth
