Golf-Tiger the best current sportsman???
well guys he has done it again.....Tiger is back on track with his 6 straight stroke play championship win at the WGC Amex event over the weekend....
apart from the lapses in match play he has had in UK/Ireland.......he did look slightly human in the Ryder Cup....his stroke play this year has been incredible...phenominal....unbeatable....or whatever superlative you wish to apply...
Obviously Tiger gets my vote but was just wondering who you think is the world's current best sportsman and why.....
Sure there are others who have dominated their sports in recent times.....Schumacher stands out...but hey we are talking about sportsmanship here as well.....and he ain't no sportsman....
Bubka the Russina pole vaulter was unbeatable for years and kept breaking world records with ease....the British rower steve Redgrave won gold in three consecutive olympics....Jordan had no real peers in his time....and I'm sure there are plenty of great examples I can't think of off the top of my head at present
so who gets your vote as the worlds best sportsman.....?????

Good question Nels' and difficult to argue against Tiger.
Valentino Rossi is almost untouchable on two wheels and on inferior machinery, but somehow I cant compare the two.
I'll have to think some more about this one

I like to think about sportsmen as athletes and these Golfers hardly sweat through their shirts
What about Roger Federer who won his ninth major tennis championship at the Open ?

Is golf a sport?
If you can wear a jumper while playing, it cant be a sport! More like a game or past time!

I never followed the sport or gave it much attention but having read Lance Armstrongs autobiography recently, and seeing a longish interview, for attitude, character, determination, etc.. He is definitely a contender.

Yes definitley Federer and Armstrong (if you put the drug slurs aside like I do) have great merit.....
Both champions and dominate big time and both set great examples in sportsmanship too!!!
Interesting to see Tiger at the US Open in FedEx's box whilst he was playing an American....(Rodick)...????
and ain't nobody gonna brake Armstrong's Tour de France record in what must be one of the most gruelling sports in the world....he was simply without peer there.....
and valentino Rossi has as Dawsey says dominated his sport with inferior machinery....I also really love him in interviews........he really comes across as a cheeky fun loving guy.....
Troy Bayliss (sorry gotta drop an Aussie in here) another in the 2 wheel version is also going great guns at the mo'.....

Rossi' up there. He's dominated every GP class he's been in and won 5 championships in a row. 23 consecutive podium finishes. Personally he's the best GP rider I've seen in my lifetime.

well guys.....have to make a point here......I did say current sportsman.....
so I do count Golf as a sport.........sure maybe it could be argued that it is not he most athletic sport.....but a sport nonetheless........
tennis players wear jumpers too when they are cold (same same golfers) ......and we always call it a footy jumper here.....what is a feckin' guernsey anyway apart from a cow......
oh and I think Mick Doohan WAS a wonderful MB rider....but he'd be lucky to get his legover one now......poor arthritic bastard.......more broken bones than a cemetry poor Mick.......

When you say sportsman I think of guys who are good sports, not just good at thier sport. Tiger dominates his sport and from what I've seen he seems like a genuine sportsman. Carries himself with class. Micheal Jordon was that way, so was Gretzky. Armstrong to but not in the same class.
Some guys just seem to be so far ahead of thier peers that they don't need all the bluster and carrying on that seems to follow professional atheletes. Tiger strikes me as the type of guy you could run into in a bar or restaurant and and have a drink and a laugh with. It's also what makes him so marketable to sponsors.

agreed Dave.......for me it is just as important to be a sporting man as a sportsman.........hence my disregard for Schumacher......he could win a hundred more GPs and I wouldn't rate him.....not compared to the guys who have come before him....so many greats but look at Fangio, Stirling Moss, Jack Brabham, Jackie Stewart, Alain Prost + Aatron Senna...........shoot you couldn't get a much better bunch of sporting men than that.......unless you start including golfers......

She won the 2004 Olympic Gold Medal with a new World Record (then 4.91 m), was elected Female Athlete of the Year by the IAAF twice (2004 and 2005) and has set 18 world records. On July 22, 2005, she became the first female pole vaulter to clear 5.00 metres.
At the age of 24 she is seen as the best female pole vaulter in history. She has already crowned herself 5-time major champion (Olympic, World outdoor and indoor champion and European outdoor and indoor champion) and became the first woman to clear the metric barrier of 5.00 m.

Golf-Tiger the best current sportsman???
If you just go for the performance i think Lance Armstrong is a strong candidate, but it is so many
rumours about him and specially that sport so i dont know.
But when you say Tiger Woods i also would say Annika Sorenstam, she is the female Tiger.
What about Danica Patrick, she is the most sensational new one at the moment, and do it well in a mens sport, not a winner yet but diffrent.
Or what about the winter sports ?
