England 99 - 1 at lunch on the 4th day.

Does anyone think the Aussie declaration was a bit early or maybe over confident giving England 2 days + to get 557.

This match could get very exciting towards the end.

ok we all know england will fcuk up again and get bowled out for 150, Or will they?

The faint hope has just gone 3 overs of the day left and McGrath has a double wicket maiden 261-3 to 261-5 only pieterson and flintoff now to give england a chance of any result other than another loss.

Close of play 265-5

They might last till lunch tomorrow.

can't see england gettinh another 300 odd with their tail.....once the 6th wicket is down..........should be all over early today.......

game was over when Aus scored 430 runs and then took Strauss' wicket all on day 3.........no other team in the world could do that at present...

I have to agree with you Nels'. Poor application in the England 1st inns cost us dear after such a good start. Australia piled it on with some superb batting in their 2nd innings and England will be gone before lunch if Pieterson or Flintoff get out. Its all over then

BTW Strauss was stitched up a treat with that decision, but things like that level themselves out over a series.
England just have to admit that they are not good enough this time around, and the loss of Trescothick before the series started wasn't ideal.
Add that to some strange selections and some indifferent performances from certain players, coupled with some great individual Aussie performances and its game over

Ricky Ponting is beaming from ear to ear, receiving hugs and applause from all his team-mates. And Duncan Fletcher begrudgingly goes round to John Buchanan and shakes his hand - frostily, it must be said. And here come England out onto the pitch to congratulate Australia. Interestingly that's only the 14th fourth-innings score of 350 or more to lose a Test. And Australia's fist-pumping celebrations to the crowd really shows a side who were, last year, so crushed after losing to England; this means so much to them.

Warne to Panesar, OUT, BOWLED HIM and Australia have regained the Ashes. They mob Shane Warne and are all in the centre of the pitch.
MS Panesar b Warne 1 (9b 0x4 0x6) SR: 11.11

Well Done to the Aussies. Without doubt, the best team has won the series.

England have been a massive disappointment, and have really only been on top for two days out of three tests.

I feel the next meeting should be a cracking series, Australia will be rebuilding, Hayden, Langer, McGrath and maybe even Warne unlikely to play another Ashes series. But great players like Clarke( the batsman), Hussey, Tait, and Clark (the bowler) have stepped up to show they are good enough.

As for England, Vaughan was a big loss, Trescothick too, although I doubt he will play test cricket again( ting tong) and also Jones. Get Vaughan and Jones back, Cook and Bell have improved a lot and get the captaincy away from Flintoff and England will go much better.

I agree. Although soundly beaten so far, England have shown they have a number of class players.

I like particularly Cook who seems to have the makings of greatness about him. Whilst some of the other batsmen, particularly Peitersen are all class.

The English bowling however clearly lacks players of the calibre of the Australian bowlers and their wicket keeper, well how could he be compared to Gilchrist.

In the last two days a lesser team then England would have submitted meekly to Australia but England made a fight of it. But the lead was just too great.

Pity about the tail which really is weak whearas the Australian tail wags right to the end. Of course the Aussie tail does not have to face its own bowling which makes their task that much easier.

I am probably an optimist but I like the look and spirit of this England team. They should look eagerly to the future and put the past behind them.

The worst thing they could do now is make rash decisions when instead the should rebuild rather then punish failure which they normally do.

I wouldn't have thought "massive" Roger.....1st Test losing the toss fvcked em......2nd Test, Giles droppin that catch cost em big time.....true they fvucked up final day, but if Giles had of hung onto the catch, l think England would have possibly won that test, just as l think if Warne had have held on to Pietersen's chance at the Oval in 2005 Australia would have won that test and retained the Ashes.

3rd test....yep England outplayed.....but much better performance from England than previous recent tours.....think they have the nucleous of a good team in the future......put Vaughan and Simon Jones in that team and a decent keeper and it would have been very close indeed. Pietersen is going to be a superstar if he is not already, Australia really have no answer to him at this stage.

yep good points from Mav allround........I think that without Trescothic + Vaughan England was a different side.....but it was great to see Panasar come into his own...I hope Giles never gets another look in........and Pietersen is absolutely world class.....

They will be sorely missed, but although they bowled well, as the always have, they looked a little tired/old to me. I am glad for their sakes that they are retiring. They have done more than enough.

Personally I don't think I will see their likes again. Great bowlers.

Bring on the new kids. They have a high standard to maintain.

The time has come to bring in new players as we don't need anymore Husseys or Clarks kept out of the game until they are into their thirties. What a waste? How much could they have done? But still they got a chance.

I expect another couple of players might pull stumps at the end of the series.

I reckon you might be saying cheerio and thanks to Hayden and Langer too.

If Warne goes, its a great shame for Australia. I still reckon he is the best spinner out there, Muri included, and still has a few more test matches left in him. McGrath also has been a superb bowler, but not so hard to replace as Warne IMO
