Beckham earns some pocket money.

Just heard on the news , Beckham has signed a contract to play for LA Galaxy in California from Aug this year.

Get this , he is being paid $1million a week for 5 years

The club must be mad

but not even considering his play
i would not be suprised if the leauge was picking up part of the tab
merchandising alone will cut that bill in half

He usually insists on a large percentage of image rights written into his contract.
Whatever, he is such a damn lucky guy, and IMO LA Galaxy are mad to pay him this amount.

Well, Roger, you can keep his wife. We don't have any need for women who admit that they have stretch marks here in LA, ruining the perfect view of all of our starlets lying around the pools in Beverly Hills trying to get noticed(that is while they are not busy on someone's casting couch).

I remember what Pele did for soccer here in the US but do not think that he will have that kind of impact.

its not all LA Galaxy
alot of the 250mil is coming from endorsements
i believe one is Adidas, which owns a stake in MLS
so basiaclly its MLS signing Beckham and putting him in LA so that he gets the most exposure

Its still far too much money for a guy on his way out. His best is way behind him, and he knows it.
At best Galaxy will get 2 years of reasonable football from him.

What makes me really wonder, is that an English premiership team would pay him maybe $120k a week for perhaps 2 years. So in that respect, he is a very astute guy, and I don't blame him for going down this path.

but your not seeing my point
its not about the LA Galaxy
its all about MLS
they did it for the exposure that Beckham brings, and no other footballer in the world could bring that to the states
you have to realize one thing
over the pond by you and in all of Europe, people would look at the Beckham siging as ridiculous and say they could've signed so-and-so player instead
in the states, we are not sophistaced football fans, so its all about the name

It was between LA and NYC
and quite frankly, his image suits LA far better than NYC

but I guarantee he settles in Nyc for a period of time in the offseason

I do see your point . The name and face is massive exposure to MLS and the club.
They obviously think its money well spent. I only commented from a footballing side of things, but the revenue from him being there is huge for the US.
I was only questioning the value, as a footballer, which is hugely inflated.

You have been reading too many newspapers. I don't believe everything I read, especially tabloid press.

Anyway, have you seen her lately? I wouldn't have blamed him

Everyone single person around the Globe knows Beckham, no celeb magazine where
he and his family is not covered. He's got the looks & the fashion, half of the
english lads follow whatever hairstyle he's got and in addition he's loaded with
money. Mmhhh, I wouldn't exactly call this a "no-body" ;-)

Beck's is blessed with his looks, whatever he does or wears, it just looks great.
Mix this with a bit of a skill in passing a ball and you got the perfect
Football Celeb. I think he & his wife fit CA perfectly. Man, the guys from Rodeo
Drive surly opened a bottle of champagne after the news they are coming to LA.

Good looking ppl will always make it more easy in life. Too many ppl
daydream and identify themselves with them. Ronaldinio playing at his
best but looking like Goofy will not even have half the impact Becks has. I agree
with Marc, it's not about the footbal but all about awareness.

I forgot to add, as for the money, this is just outrages. It's a crazy world ! Hard to
relate to that. But for the marketing world it's peanuts and David is the lucky guy
fullfilling all their requirements.

Fair play to him, I will bring a lot of good things to Soccer in the states, And he will bring loads of kids into playing the beautiful game, Thats what this deal is all about and the revenue that his name alone brings to the table will cover the costs, He will bring in massive TV money, Everyone will want to see how he is getting on whether you like the guy or not, The world media will be all over this will will generate massive income for the league... Not only that but Adidas, MLS, LA Galaxy plus other sponsership deals are paying his wages.. I think its a major coup for Soccer in America, Beckham is far from over the hill and has plenty of football left in him, IMO he should still be apart of the England team, Maybe not in the first team squad but there is times in matches were his ability to whip crosses in and take free-kicks is priceless...

Anyway not bad for a guy with supposedly no brain, Who came from a working class family in Peckham eh????

PS: And for those who are saying he only got by on his looks alone and was never really a player, Should take a closer look at his achievements during his carear, He has won everything in club football which any player would be proud of and was a vital member of that Man Utd team that dominated the 90's, With the exception of England he has achieved the lot, But even with them I remember one year he single handidly dragged them into the either the Euro's or the World Cup in a match against Greece, Some people have short memories....

Good luck to him - if I had to choose a place to live L.A. would be up there - was the best place I ever lived (other than the nightlife).

Next will be Becks - the movie star - well lets hope not!

Still for the kids will be far better than living in the UK (yuk).

love him or hate him Mr.Bechkam has pretty much conqured the whole planet and you dont do that with look's alone. He is probaly the best ever crosser/freekicker player i have ever seen play and doubt any one will come close to him for years to come. Its a win/win situation for Beckham and MSL with the only loser being a underperforming premiership side who could really use his leadership. You cant say he didn't lead by example (England vs Greece)

But the amount of money involved is a scandal. way way to much. that money could go to much more worthy things....like funding a board member's LOS trip!!!! dam u backham..lol.
