World Cup 2010 going to Oz?

I heard a story this week that Australia has been put on standby for the 2010 football WC. South Africa is gearing up for it, they were awarded the tournament, but the FIFA bods seem to be getting jumpy about them.

Anyone else heard this?

Steve, there has been a lot of rumour and speculation in our local press since SA was awarded the WC.This peaked about 3 months ago.FIFA then announced that all was on track after their routine inspections and Sepp Blatter made a statement that the tournament would stay in SA.

However with crime as it is,I suppose anything is possible.Construction is continuing on a large scale so there will be major financial implications if it is pulled.

IJ,South Africa has successfully hosted two World Cups before-Rugby and Cricket.Granted that neither of these is on the scale of Football WC,however we have got quite a lot of infrastructure in place which just needs to be upgraded eg. there are rugby stadiums that hold 20 000-70 000 odd people.

That being said, people shouldn't expect a 'German style' World Cup with high speed trains running to the split second, this will be an African style World Cup with game parks and good weather(even tho in winter),probably more like a WC in Brazil.

Crime is the biggest concern although the Govt claims to be taking drastic steps to combat it.

If that's the case, they probably shouldn't of awarded it to SA in the first place.

Leaving aside the political/security angle (if that it possible) I would reckon that the USA would be best placed to step in at the last minute, rather than Australia.

Nobody outside Germany is waiting for another World Cup where the host nation is clearly favoured so much than during the last World Cup!

In my opinion there were 2 tournaments before that I can recall, where this happened too, being Germany '74 and Argentina '78.

As long as South Africa is successful in getting their stadiums ready in time and make sure the fans can move arround safely, I don't really see a problem. It is the charm of a tournament like this, that it is organized in different countries on different continents.

Also know that Mr. Joseph Blatter is probably the sports official who "invented" corruption. He doesn't really care where it will be held, as long as he can make nice trips and makes a lot of money out of it. The was an English journallist some time a go, who made a perfect documentary about this issue.

I can't see it going to the US, the game was supposed to take off after it went there ('94?) and it just didn't happen. Australia, meanwhile, is reporting football as the fastest growth sport in their country, couple that with a sport-mad mentality, stadiums left over from the Commonwealth Games and Olympics, and the transport networks to cope, and you would have to say that if any country could step in and host a great WC at short notice it would be Australia.

South Africa is on a fairly slippery slope politically at the moment, and has a murder rate five times that of the USA. The naughty boys in SA must be rubbing their hands in anticipation of all those dumb tourists turning up.

I would be surprised to see FIFA pull the pin on them, but it would be commercially disastrous if even one travelling fan got killed at the hands of criminals and maybe that is what is in the back of the minds of the FIFA bods?

That is the biggest problem, SA is a fairly dangerous place.

the interest in soccer as a spectator sport has never been higher now
people in the US really got into this last WC and it recieved alot more media coverage
i think if FIFA had interests in the States, and 2010 was available to give, they would be extremely smart to bring it back to the states
that will be year 3 of the "beckham experiment" also. along with some other bigger names that i think might end up finishing their careers in MLS.

SA's current crime problem is exacerbated by unemployment and poor education. Both of these are results of previous poor political policies.

Economic growth in SA in the last quarter was just under 6%.Approx 500 000 new jobs were created last year.Although it takes a while to filter thru these are the types of things that positively effect crime levels.Construction on roads, hotels, airports, stadiums and high speed train lines are all major contributing factors.I guess FIFA thought about this before they awarded the WC to SA?

Take these away and it'll be like a bullet to the head.

I actually hope that it does go to SA and the tournament goes off well. It would be very wrong of FIFA to award it and then take it away, so maybe they are just hedging their bets while waiting to see which way the country goes over the next few years?

There is that, though (as ever) us England fans won't be needing to watch much beyond the QFs.

.

Far more deserving countries than the USA Paul. It was hosted there in 1994.

England are going to bid to host the 2018 WC, and they last hosted it in 1966.
I think the US will have to wait for another 30years or longer. Time Brazil had another chance IMO. Such an exciting side, and country, and haven't had it since 1950, despite winning it 5 times. They are bidding to host it, along with the US in 2014
