Patriotism in Sport
I was watching the world matchplay golf over the weekend and found myself backing Geoff Ogilvy who is a fellow Australian........but in an earlier matchup was supporting Sergio.........
then was watching rugby and supporting NZ teams.........where I now live....over AUS + SA teams
then it was Ireland vs England and I was supporting Ireland.....because I like their brand of Rugby at present and I like the place as a country and have a fondness for its people/sense of self..........and at the last RWC I had no truck with England beating Australia because they were the better team in the final (and overall event IMHO)......even though it was won in extra time on a kick.........
In football I support Australia at international level now that they have a team worthy of it...........and I would prefer the Spanish league to the UK premiership......in cricket I sometimes enjoy the AUS team beaten but not by Englkand or SA.......weird I know.......
I was just wondering.........how many of you support only your own country vehemently when it comes to Sports or whether you have a weakness for teams or individual players from other countries over your own

I am very random.. I find myself rooting for the underdog a lot in sport.. I love it when a team who has been talked down prematch then works its ass off and comes through..
I find myself supporting Ireland in rugby (but not really being irish) partly because they have an underdog feel sometimes, partly through historical descent, partly just to be a contrary bastrad around my english and jock mates. I do find myself rooting for whoever is playing against the French, I cant help it !!
I really dont watch much sport that is nationalistic though... Rugby really only one.. Otherwise sports I like to watch are less defined by nationalism.

To be honest, i dont know any names from the local sports scene.
Thanx to the satellite tv and Internet, i rather follow oversea sports.
I enjoy watching rugby also, just know a few names and cheer for Aussie cause i love the country and people there.
Football i have always cheered for England, cause of the EPL. Games from Serie A and Bundesliga is also shown, but i have not watched them before.
Erm what else. NBA? Dont know how i ended up supporting Miami Heats.
Golf, i just like to watch them play, dont really support anyone.
Cheers.

Wow! Great thread
Being from the states we are more state-minded than following our national teams, except for the olympics, which we back wholeheartedly
For me, I am one of the biggest sports fan I know
I am also from Boston, which means I follow the Boston teamd religiuosly. From moving around, I have realized people from other cities adopt teams from different cities. That just does not happen if you are from Boston.
I buy all the sports packages and watch the boston teams everynight
I'm a proud member of Red Sox Nation!!!!!

quite interesting the US team sport thing really.........as their main sports are not played by many other nations.......
Baseball........well who else plays in the "world series"........and only really played professionally in Japan outside US
NFL.....not even Canada has bought into this one
Ice Hockey...a few nations but not really enough to get a good competition.....
Basketball.....well shock horror if anyone could actually beat a "real" US team ther may be some interest in this sport internationally
I saw the US Eagles......Rugby 7's team....... here in Wellington a few weeks ago.....they really seem to enjoy themselves despite not progressing out of their pool.........Canada did better
Football (or Soccer) would be the one to watch....it has grown enormously popular now in the US and they've had good growth on the back of a home world cup and another one where they've made it to the main event...and now with Mr Beckham coming along the profile is set to continue growing rapidly.....
I enjoy the swimming when the US and Australia meet at Olympic or Pan Pacific levels........there's great swiming on offer and a nice rivalry between the two countries

I like it when the Olympics come around... Its great to see all these different sports that I normally wouldn't see. I like the swimming & diving.
Ireland never do too well at the Olympics... One of our gold medals was stripped off us last Olympics for doping... A horse was the offender!
I would watch most sports as long as theres are good competitive edge to it.

I am really an addict on watching sports. On tv or in the stadium. Yes, I am a patriot as it goes about international competitions.
Of course, I favour all the Dutch atlethes or teams participating.
Secondly I support all the teams that play against Germany.
Moreover, although I am a Ajax fan all the way and I always hope their nearest competitors loose every weekend, I am patriot enough to support all Dutch teams when they play in Europe.
For Football I favour Holland and when they are kicked out, I go for Brazil.
In F1, I lilked Villeneuve and Montoya. Too bad they left.
Ice hockey: my team is Montreal Canadiens.
But what worries me is .....: If I look at various sports I find that in teams the mix between nationals and foreigners, is getting worse.
Example: last Tuesday we had the game PSV-Arsenal. In the starting line up of PSV there were just 2 Dutch players in a Dutch team. Arsenal did not put one Englishman in their starting line up.
I find this bad and would be all for a rule telling that there should be a limitation on foreigners in a team. Like a maximum of 4 foreigners per team. In this way you loose the connection between you and your team IMHO. What do you guys think about this?
