When Irish eyes are smiling
Congrats to Padraig Harrington for winning the 2007 British Open. Today's broadcast was a nail biter, even for golf!
BTW, I couldn't believe the weather at Carnoustie in July!

Very exciting finish with Sergio just lipping the hole for a putt to win the championship outright.
Harrington played the 1st hole again perfectly, and his birdie to Garcia's bogey gave him those 2 shots advantage. Final hole nailbiter, but Harrington held out to win by 1 shot.
If you think Scotland is bad, look at the BBC news website and see the flooding over middle/southern England! Its worse than wintertime.

Heh Steve, Carnoustie is in Scotland, its like that and worse everyday of the year!!!
Wonder if that loss will now spur Sergio on to acheive his full potential, always think that he has so much talent but he doesn't take the game seriously enough.

Poor ol' Sergio looked absolutely gutted when that putt lipped the hole on the 18th. I didn't fancy him to win the playoff from that point.

The 18th hole (with the bern(s).... must be named after Dodger? ) just makes people crack, especially on the 72nd hole... Must be adrenaline overload. Harrington hit the bern twice on the 72nd... making double bogey, which set the stage for Garcia's lip out, sending it into the playoff.
Incidentally, I like the 4 hole cumulative shot playoff format, better than sudden death.
Also, I think they (ABC/ESPN here in the US) overdid the Van de Velde meltdown in 1999.
Dodger, re: Garcia you may be right, but it looks like he has been weight training. He looked bigger (maybe it was the double layer clothes)... but he was hitting the ball much farther than what I remember.

55555That's what one of the commentators said too.
To be fair, the UK have had beautiful hot summers for the past 5 years or more. Its just 2007 is a bad one!

TNT had coverage of the opening two rounds. They also overdid the Van de Velde story also(among other things).
Without digital cable the tournament was pretty much unwatchable in the US. Set the recorder, and after recording a few hours I was able to sit down and watch the tournament in an enjoyable fashion. Used the FF button to bypass the plethora of commercials and highlights.
I bet SuperSport did a far better job broadcasting the tournament. Far fewer commercials, and breaks.
Just a great tournament to watch. Great course, great drama, nasty weather, and an abundance of strategies for those tough holes. Congrats again to Padraig on winning the most prestigious golf tournament in the world. And yeah it was a nail biter, I was rooting against Sergio from the first day.

I thought he had blown it but he got there in the end.
Fantastic but Garcia is also a star.
A great moment was when at the 18th hole of regulation play Harrington (quite rightly) thought he had blown his chance of winning the championship yet he still had time to play around with his young son.
That was nice.

Yeah, it looked a bit funny, but in my view much better than another player walking around in a very bright pink trousers...
