Schumacher in Ferrari test

The latest news about our 38 year old billionaire racer is always sure to connect.

I for one am glad to see the FIA's _attempt_ to bring drivers back into the race-winning loop. Do they understand that their product is... entertainment? Not pure performance, as such?

Consider a sphere were performance is all that counts: Military aviation. Air Forces have resigned themselves to pilotless aircraft... see the stunning success of UAVs. The replacement for the current heavy bomber fleet will be unmanned. If the FIA wants to avoid the same fate then something needs to be done now.

But the specter of a F1 car which is little more than a titanium/carbon fiber go-kart... that is scary.

Rumour in some of the UK press is that McClaren may try to lure Schumacher back to F1 to drive for them next season.
With Mercedes powering the McClaren, its understandable to want the German behind the wheel. Other drivers nominated for the seat include Nico Rosberg from Williams, Adrian Sutil from the Spyker team, and Pedro De La Rosa, current McClaren test driver.

Super S

More power to Schuey, may he reign supreme.

But (as he breathlessly awaits my input) he might consider that he could be of greater benefit to the "sport" as an Elder Statesman. And, he is, er, aged by the standards of F1. Were he to un-retire his progression to the back of the pack is inevitable.

He must realize the automation problem and, he is unique in his ability to address it. He has the total respect of the drivers-- love him or hate him everyone simply must listen to him. If he is out there in a "low-tech" car pushing to the limit-- his own posterior on the line-- there would likely be no repeat of the Indianapolis Debacle of 2005.

The constructors can build a car to any FIA rules package-- that is the easy part. The trick is to get the drivers to enthusiastically embrace such a car... and put on a good show for a change.

Schumacher could very well save the Show from oblivion. But he is the only one, IMHO, without him there is no bridge between the drivers and "others."

My $0.02, of course.

Point 1 Although an elder statesman, Schumacher can still teach the majority of the F1 grid how to win in a racing car. Age ( only 38) has not diminished his
talent ...........yet.

Point 2. Schumacher is no fool. He would only drive two constructors cars Ferrari and McClaren, the top two out there. Certainly not low tech cars.

Point 3. The only thing to save F1 from deserting crowds and apathy (oblivion) is (a) The constant changing of rules to make F1 more exciting and new drivers like Lewis Hamilton who just failed to win the F1 championship in his rookie season. Also new venues like the night race in Singapore should promote the sport elsewhere.

Just my 2pence worth as well 555

Perhaps I was not clear enough: I envision him as a test driver, proof of concept driver, whatever, but NOT a "line" driver. IOW he would not race in the races but rather demonstrate what the low tech cars can do.

From the BBC article:

"Ferrari want to tap into the 38-year-old's experience of F1 cars without electronic driver aids ahead of the ban on such systems for next year."

If the FIA is smart (whatever that means) then presently ALL cars will be low tech. Next year's ban is but the first step in this process.

I still maintain that Schumacher is at the pinnacle of his career-- it can only go down from here. And... that he is the only man alive who can "save" F1.

Sure, he could be a test driver, but his reluctance to even test for Ferrari, although employed by them, makes me feel he would decline that offer.

You are correct in saying that F1 want to impose all sorts of rules regarding the removal of driver aids (ie traction control) The problem has been that until now, every year the cars gets faster even when they reduce the cc, and bring in other rules to slow the cars. The tracks in general cannot be safe with the speeds the cars are reaching. So they have to slow them down somehow.

As for Schumacher being the "only man alive who can save F1" I don't see that at all. But thats just my opinion, same as you have yours.

Schumacher turned out a hot qualifying time on Casey Stoner's Ducati at Valencia. Quite impressive considering motorcycles are just his hobby.

Schumacher has been a busy boy then.

He managed to lap 5 seconds slower than Danii Pedrosa`s race times at Valencia.

F1 in Singapore: Michael Schumacher Back On Track for Testing

But he denies he will be racing a F1 again.

Then again, who needs Schumi when we have the great "Team Flying Dutch Man" !

They have a very experienced pilot and with a little bit of assistance from his co-pilot he
even finds his way on the track:

"Next corner turn right honey. Little bit straight tirak, next corner right honey, next
corner right again...cha cha, Darling, hew mak mak, pitstop now please"
