best sports events already gone to/sports events you wish to go to
here are some i've been to and venues i just love:
THINGS I'VE BEEN TO:
-Superbowl 34 in New Orleans when Pats won 1st SB(it was so unbelievable as a life ling fan of Pts that they won a SB!!)
-Superbowl 38 in Houston(i really didnt love the city too much but what a game and it seemed the way the tickets were sold the fans were almost segregated so gave a real high school type feel for cheering)
-any playoff game at Fenway(to me, best place and atmosphere to watch any game)
-went to a game at Wrigley field(Chicago is one of my favorite cities in the world, what a great, great city!!)
-Larry Bird's last game ever at Boston Garden(we didnt know it at the time because it was a playoff game and they went on the road and got bounced afterwards. what a privlege ti was to grow up 10 minutes from Boston Garden, just an old school joint i miss terribly!!)
-I sat courtside at a Blazers-Clippers game(clippers for some reason have always been my 2nd team and i am a hoops junkie and sitting there you can hear all the players talking, it was great
SPORTING EVENTS I WANT TO SEE:
-Lambeau Field
-an Arsenal game(hopefully this Spring)
-a big time SEC, Pac 10, amd Big 10 college football game(next autumn)
- and i want to got to the World Cup

think I've seen samplings of the ones I really want/wanted to see.....highlights include
3 rugby World Cup Finals
Cricket test matches in Aus, NZ, West indies, England and India
Football matches in England and Europe at both club + international levels
Olympics in the US, Australia + Greece
International Surfing Events in Aus, Hawaii, Noumea, Bali, Spain + France
International Golf Tournaments all around the world....but would still love to see the US Master's
Yankees match at home
Green Bay Packers match at home
I'm finding the logistics are becoming more difficult to achieve for the return on really big time events these days...especially with flying and buying good seats at the grounds

Scotland v England rugby at Murrayfield was special, Also France v NZ at Stade De France. I learned what national anthems should be at those games.
Football wise I've seen United play a few times and Old Trafford can lack atmosphere sometimes, but it is a special place.
The football games I really remember are the ones when they used to cram 35,000 into Bloomfield Road, nearly all stood up, scary as hell but incredible games to be at. They used to pass us kids over the top of the crowd so we could sit on the wall at the front and be able to see the game.
Best ever was Blackpool v Sunderland, amazing game of football that Blackpool won 3-2. Mickey Walsh scored the goal of the season and it became part of the Match of the Day theme for the following season.
That would have been around 1975 and I can still remember it as if it was yesterday.
The Monaco F1 was pretty special too. The race is crap but the event itself is quite something.
I had a few seasons involved with junior rugby, and that can be quite something too. The second season my boy played they won one of the county trophies and he got man of the match, that was a day that I will remember for ever.
I think the only event I really want to see now is the Rugby World Cup. I don't really care for big crowds these days so tend to avoid match days mostly, but when RWC goes to New Zealand I fully intend to be there.
After 2011, rugby will be sold out to commercialism and the World Cup will go to the country that can deliver the biggest pay packet. I think the kiwis will put on the best rugby tournament that we have ever seen, one for the fans before the game changes forever.

For me the nicest events to watch in a stadium or similar were:
Montreal Canadiens beating Boston Bruins in the old Montreal Forum back in 1992.
Arsenal-Fiorentina back in 1999 in the historic Wembley Stadium
The Monaco Grand Prix in 1994, as it was the 1st race after Senna died.
Champions league final in 1995 in Vienna when AJAX beat AC Milan.
I still want to see a home game of Scotland rugby team. I have nothing with the game, but the atmosphere seems great.
World Championship speed skating in Heerenveen, Holland. So difficult to get tickets for.
Some game during a Football worldcup.

prices are certainly on the increse....some exponentially
But my coment is actually more about the scarceity/availability of tickets and the difficulties of dropping everything to fly halfway accross the world to see a major sporting event....whereas once I wouldn't have thought twice about it....
like you i'm happy to bring along a friend or two who otherwise wouldn't get the opportunity paulie.....its one of the small rewards we get for working hard/taking risks

Game 6, 2002 World Series, Angels vs. Giants. Huge come from behind win. Down by 5 runs in the seventh the rally monkey came out and the Angles beat the Giants (and BB). Great game!

Some time back on a visit to the states I had some eye-openers.
I never liked American Football cause of those many interruptions, there never was a real flow in that game.
Once I joined live game in the stadium, even "only" college football, in Eugene (Oregan) it was actually a lot of fun (especially the shows of the chearleaders before the game started, damn, I don't have the pictures on that laptop now, otherwise I would post them). By chatting with the people around, I started to understand the strategy of the game, it made more sense and became a lot of fun.
I also joined a baseball game there, although it was not as exciting as american football to follow, but I loved the hotdogs and burgers during that very long game.
I gave baseball another try with the Dodgers in LA, man, those games are really long ... I realized this when they were announcing the 7th inch stretch or something like that.
Ever since, I always look forward to see the Superbowl on TV every year, now that I know it has nothing to do with Bowling:-)
Another of those never ending games is Cricket, although I lived in England for a while, I don't understand the rules and find it overly boring. Maybe I need to go and see it live to change my mind. On TV, it doesn't jump on me as interesting to watch.
Other than that, I'm a big fan of the best football (or soccer) league of the world -> the "Bundesliga" and of cause the Germans National Super Team who are going to win the next European Championships followed by the Worldcup. I never joined a game live, not even back last years WC in Germany, but that's on the agenda for the future.

How nice if you can dream of things that won't happen ...
The colour of the above highlighted text should already tell you who will win these tournaments...
But I give you one though.... I fully agree with you on the cricket.

Hey Nanook, I was just re-thinking and actually wondered why you are not so much into cricket, didn't the Dutch had a famous player called Johan Cricket or something like that?

No, cricket here is not popular at all. It is regarded as a "upper class sport". As far as balls and bat sports are concerned, we prefer baseball. Holland just finished 4th in the World Cup last week and are reighning Euro champs for the last number of years.
But my favorite sports to watch are football, F1, Ice hockey from the NHL, speed skating and golf.

Ah, must have been Johan Cruyff than, sorry, got that one mixed up 5555
I know that hockey and tennis are considered upper-class sports in Holland.
At my mums village they call them kakkers ...

My best memories have to come from the couple of times I have seen Wales bt England in Cardiff in rugby but also remember a couple of football matches in the early 80's, one when Mark Hughes scored in Wrexham to bt England and the time when Ian Rush (I think) scored at the old Hamden Park for us to bt Scotland. The Tarten Army were brilliant that night.
Opening match of the 87 world cup Wales Vs Argentina at the Millenium Stadium.
Best atmosphere has to be the visit to Parc de Princess for France vs Wales 5 Nations match (France won that one).
Phuket 2005 Beach volleyball at Patong beach was quite exciting
Sporting event want to see.
Wales win at rugby again please.
The Augusta masters.

Nicest I have seen:
Half final eurocup 1988 in Hamburg between Holland and Germany.
New york city marathon in 2002 and 2004. (also running it)
Elfstedentocht 1986 en 1997. (It's a long distance speedskating marathon 200Km)
Motor Racing TT - Assen.
I would like to see:
Final eurocup 2008 between Holland and Germany.
Cheers,
Raval

I am affraid we won't be able to see that final next year. I am not really sure about us, but:
Germany definately wont reach it
