No shortage of ice in Canada...

There was a small league running here in South Africa a few years ago.
I don't know if it is still active...

Field Hockey is quite popular here, but lags quite far behind Soccer, Rugby and Cricket.

Mostly a girls sport here too...
But then again, we play Rugby, a real contact sport and without the funny tight pants, helmet and body armour that you guy's use in your Football.
No decent Rugby match is complete without a bucket full of blood being spilt and at least two dozen stitches being administered on the side lines...

Same Same....

I just wish that Rugby would be taken more seriously in the States...
At the moment it would seem to be played mainly by expats judging from your team at the recent World Cup.
I am sure that with enough exposure and the right sort of financial backing the USA Eagles could be built in to serious contenders on the World stage over a ten year period or so.

In Holland field hockey is very popular as we use our ice rinks only for speed skating . Our leagues for both men and women are regarded similar as the premier league for football.

Our nation's teams is world class. Both men and women. This together with Australia and the bl@@dy Germans.

Dutch ice hockey team is in the B or C group for the world championships.

New Year - same attitude, ha!

I played Icehockey age 13 in Germany, for a year or so. It was bloody intense, 3 trainings during the week and then off to play against other teams in the weekends. Needless to say, school suffered and I had to choose whether to become a legendary Icehockey superstar or not, ohh well ...

Of course... you should always maintain your good habbits!

Too bad, you didn't continue. I would have loved to play icehockey too, but the gear was too expensive here and my mom was a widow on young age, so we could not afford it. Besides, most kids liking wintersports went for speed skating anyway.

I never tried skating on those dutch speed skates, I think I would break my neck. It's just too different from icehockey skates

Well the regular speed skates are ok. But how about the new clap skates or klapschaatsen???

Yes, I remember switching from real skates to hockey skates. Fell flat on my face quite a few times during the first couple of minutes after trying them. It is so different compared to using speed skates.

Pic 1 is a regular good quality speed skate for arround € 350 for a pair.
Pic 2 is a clap skate good quality for arround € 800 for a pair.

But eh... I think we are hijacking M26's thread.

Hah, that are speed skates too. But not with leather shoes, but plastic shoes just like those of hockey skates. They are destined for people with messed up ankles.
Just look at the blade of the skate. It is also long and straight.

Your pics are from the factory of Zandstra and mine are from Viking. They are the top 2 skate manufacturers here in Holland and especially the Viking ones are used by most of the professional top speed skaters. Viking is world leader in speed skates. Maybe similar as Bauer for hockey skates.

What sports did you play?

I can imagine in the US prof. sports and school go hand in hand. In my case school and sports were clearly seperated (and not financially supported) by eachother. Or maybe I was just not good enough..guess that was it:-)

In my opinion sports and school are much more integrated in the US and Canada than it is here in Europe. Look also how collega sports are so popular and alive there.
Sometimes you hear examples (correct me if I am wrong) of students who can hardly read or write, but they excel in a sport and therefore receive a scolarship for free just because they can throw a ball properly. At the end of the time at school they even get their graduation. In Europe such things would never happen. At least not in Holland.

Like in Germany it is in Holland too. The fact if you want to participate in any sports is Up2you and hence you as an individual pay for it. Hence fully seperated from school.

This time it has nothing to do if you were good enough or not. And I won't tease you this time of having lived as a German .

well, most sports are funded by high schools and some have bigger budgests than others
i got scholarships for football both at prep school and at university

when you get to talking about big time college athletics, that is a multi-billion dollar business so that is where the scholarships come in

Since most sports are funded as you mentioned, do you still have to pay for it when you want to participate or the school takes care of it?

Anyway when I was in a school here, which is comparable to US college, we had a big football (soccer) tournament between other similar schools in the area of The Hague. Only then we got our uniforms from school, but shoes and other things you had to bring yourself. We even had to go to the various fields/pitches by ourself. Only when we reached the finals, which was played in the stadium of the local first division professional team, we were brought there by bus.
