Well...we do love our Aussie Rules footy.

Two Australian sailors accused of beating a San Diego man in a dispute over politics and football must stand trial on assault and other charges, a judge ruled Thursday.

Philip Graeme Ferres, 26, and Kolis Barba, 25, were on leave from the HMAS Sydney last Nov. 22 when they went to a downtown bar, where they met the 28-year-old victim, Jeffrey Wilkinson.

Wilkinson testified during a 2 1/2-hour preliminary hearing that ...he got into a heated argument with Barba -- a professional Australian rules football player -- over which football is better, American or Australian.

He said they also had argued about the Middle East.

Wilkinson said he told the sailors that both countries are in the Middle East for no reason.

... the sailors chased after him and Barba punched him in the face.

Barba faces seven years in prison if convicted, and Ferris -- who is also charged with possession of cocaine -- faces nearly eight years behind bars if convicted....

Rugby union is such a minor sport in Australia, mainly played by a select group of private school boys in a handful of Sydney and Brisbane suburbs. But when it comes to mind-dumbing boredom, gridiron takes the cake!
