Former England star Paul Gascoigne has been arrested and sectioned under the Mental Health Act in Newcastle.
"Police attended the Hilton Hotel in Gateshead yesterday evening after we received a report of concern for a 40-year-old man staying at the hotel," a Northumbria Police spokesman said.
"The man was detained under the Mental Health Act and no-one was injured during the incident.''
The ex-Tottenham Hotspur, Lazio, Rangers and Middlesbrough star has been recuperating from a hip operation in his hometown of Newcastle, where he started his playing career.
He is understood to have been staying at an exclusive hotel near the city following surgery, with unconfirmed reports of erratic behaviour involving compulsive computer gaming.
"Gazza", as he is affectionately known, has had a long-documented history of problems with alcohol and depression that ultimately saw him fail to achieve his footballing potential.
Gascoigne split with his representatives Jane Morgan Management last year and had been trying to forge a career in acting under the pseudonym "G8".

What the fook is going on in England. You can't lock someone up for playing computer games while immobilised after hip surgery. Something they are not telling us here.

"Got away" with some incredible stuff that someone less charismatic or skillful would've been sacked for. Thinking of taking the Middlesboro new bus out for a spin & crashing it. Think that was his first time behind the wheel of a bus.
Who else has a mate called Jimmy 5 bellies?
He should have joined Utd when he had the chance instead of going to Spurs, Fergie would have sorted him out ....
Agree he should have gone to Utd or Arsenal at that time. But I don't think anyone could have sorted out Gazza. Totally barking mad from the beginning of his fame. He just couldn't handle it. But Fergie would have been a good steadying influence.

Probably the biggest waste of a naturally talented football career since George Best.
When he came on the pitch for England, I felt 'safe' and haven't felt like that ever since. No disrespect to players of today but they keep dubbing certain players as being 'the next Gazza' and nobody is close to the mark. Like naturally gifted talent before him, he was born to play the game, something you cannot teach in any training schools.
I just wish he was 19 years old right now with the wealth of players he would have around him in the england squad and I will never forget his perfomances for both club & country.
