England Squad

Provisional squad:
Goalkeepers: James (Portsmouth), Carson (Aston Villa), Kirkland (Wigan)
Defenders: Bridge (Chelsea), A Cole (Chelsea), Johnson (Portsmouth), Terry (Chelsea), Brown (Man Utd), Lescott (Everton), Ferdinand (Man Utd), Wheater (Middlesbrough), Woodgate (Tottenham), Upson (West Ham)
Midfielders: Barry (Aston Villa), Young (Aston Villa), Bentley (Blackburn), J Cole (Chelsea), Lampard (Chelsea), Wright-Phillips (Chelsea), Beckham (Los Angeles Galaxy), Gerrard (Liverpool), Hargreaves (Man Utd), Downing (Middlesbrough), Jenas (Tottenham)
Forwards: Walcott (Arsenal), Agbonlahor (Aston Villa), Crouch (Liverpool), Rooney (Man Utd), Owen (Newcastle), Defoe (Portsmouth).

Is Kirkland better than Ben Foster? I agree with no Paul Robinson.
Wes Brown!? How about Luke Young then?
I also think Crouch & Owen are lucky to be there. Crouch because he gets hardly any football & Owen because he hasn't done much. If they weren't included does that mean Dean Ashton & Darren Bent?

I would say that Kirkland isnt better than Foster, but Foster has only played 1 1st team game since his injury , so not really in contention yet.
Wes Brown has played more games for Utd than any other player this year and has rarely had a bad game, so fully deserves his inclusion, whereas Young has only just started to pick up after a very mediocre season.
Ashton and Bent have hardly done much more than Crouch and Owen this season, so in my opinion this choice was correct. I dont think England are blessed with a great choice in the forward positions at the moment, but i hope that Defoe gets a start.
I would say that Carrick was unlucky not to be picked, he doesnt seem to be in Capello's plans.

The Beckham thing does mystify me a bit. If Capello wanted to argue that Foster couldn't be included as he's only played 1 first team game ( & did bloody well IMO) how can Beckham be there after some friendlies in USA? Has media expectation forced his hand?
Back to the Foster thing, given that the 3rd keeper is there just to make up the numbers, it appeals to my sense of humour to name only 2 keepers (James, & Carson) & use Rio Ferdinand as 3rd keeper. Look how many centre backs are in that squad! 5555

But surely a squad is to give him a chance to see certain players up close, get to know attitude, character etc, which is why in a large squad as this, it is sometimes hard to see why so and so is included, but I do think Capello is a tad better at this job than me, so bow to his superior knowledge and my lack of it.

Wow Johnny a one line question and one of such depth!!! I should really go away and think about a total answer to your question because it is a really good one, and one I am sure many of us will debate and disagree with. I would include Beckham if fit, if fit is the impotant rider for me. Carrick is a better player more on form etc but we already have Carricks but we do not have anyone like a Beckham. What I mean by that is someone so influential to the younger players, someone who could sit on the bench and come on for the last 15 minutes and change the outcome of a game with one free kick.

So considering this, yes I would include a fit Beckham over a Carrick.

But heck mate what do I know???? afterall I'm a fecking City supporter!!!! I'm still routing for the inclusion of Colin Bell!!!

Well i am a UTD fan , and even though Beckham, at the moment, is one of the best 23 players we have and so worthy of place in the squad , i still think what is the point. We haven't qualified for the euro championships , so should be building towards the next world cup, which he will in all likelihood not be a part of .
Also, i dont think it should be a debate about Carrick v Beckham as they play different positions, but Carrick is a better player than Jenus every day of the week .

I think that Bentley needs the opportunities (such as this friendly) to see if he is a genuine replacement for Beckham or is he just another nearly man. Beckham has been a wonderful & inspirational player, but I think it's time to look to the future. Maybe Ashley Young can step up too.
I prefer Carrick to Jenas too, Carrick must've run over Capello's cat or perhaps it's not that Carrick isn't good enough - maybe his style doesn't fit the way Capello wants to play.

I think the whole Beckham saga and the 100th cap is about to be put to rest. Capello will play Beckham from the start take him off 10 mins into the second half so he gets a big send off from the crowd which IMO he thoroughly deserves. After that i dont think Beckham will be in Capello's plans anymore, he just wants to move on and the 100th cap ghost is taking stage over everything else...

Moving on..... Carrick isn't good enough, simple as that, Jenas is a class act when he wants to be and unfortunately his inconsistancy will cost him a regular place in the England set up.

Carrick better than Jenas, well its a matter of opinion one of which i'm not going to comment being a Spurs fan. However Carrick hasn't been missed since he left Spurs, and to get 18 million for a player who can't get in the England squad speaks for itself. Spurs midfield is far more fluent and attacking without him. Tom Huddlestone is a far better option for Spurs than Carrick ever was...

Capello revised his squad. Robinson is back in.

Defenders: Wayne Bridge (Chelsea), Wes Brown (Manchester United), Ashley Cole (Chelsea), Rio Ferdinand (Manchester United), Glen Johnson (Portsmouth), Joleon Lescott (Everton), John Terry (Chelsea), Jonathan Woodgate (Tottenham Hotspur)

Midfielders: Steven Gerrard (Liverpool), Gareth Barry (Aston Villa), Owen Hargreaves (Manchester United), Joe Cole (Chelsea), David Bentley (Blackburn Rovers), Frank Lampard (Chelsea), David Beckham (LA Galaxy), Stewart Downing (Middlesbrough)

Forwards: Michael Owen (Newcastle United), Wayne Rooney, (Manchester United), Peter Crouch (Liverpool), Theo Walcott (Arsenal)

"Capello has reduced his squad from 30 to 23 and brought in Robinson to replace the injured Scott Carson.

Matthew Upson is also injured, while Gabriel Agbonlahor, Ashley Young, Shaun Wright-Phillips, David Wheater and Jermain Defoe are cut from the squad."
Copied from the BBC site - full story here if you want it: BBC SPORT | Football | Internationals | Robinson returns to England squad

Obviously Capello can do what he wants, but why is Robinson listed ahead of Kirkland? Don't let James get injured!
I feel sorry for Defoe too, especially when he considers his Pompey form

Please let us not forget his nickname is "calamity" James

The Nation relying on a keeper of his age and history is a worrying thought IMO...

Correct... but they also finished 5th the following season without him, so whats yr point ?

Spurs have benefited more with the money from his sale.... a price tag which was way over the top IMO.... So thanks Sir Alex

That always seems to England's problem - so much potential on paper, but never the results. Even when they won/win games there should be more goals. Is it the media that makes us think they're better than they are or do the players talk themselves up also?
