Disability, Retirement and other Benefits

This subject comes up because there was an incident in the family last year where a member had suffered a stroke. He was working a good job in Bangkok described to me as similar to amphur work and had plenty of money to take care of his wife and 2 children. Now after recovering from the stroke it sounds like he is unable to complete his job as he has lost the ability to use one of his arms and the paperwork is getting completed too slowly.

I am told he has money that has accrued while he worked so that if he is let go from the job he will be taken care of. I know there is no welfare system in thailand but do employers pay some sort of disability, or does their social security system cover disabled workers? I'm guessing what was discussed was his pension.

What about foreign workers like all those english teachers. If they have a heart attack while working for a government school legally, will they be taken care of or are they SOL.

Yeah, I know I can do a google search, but I thought it would be an interesting topic to have on this forum. I'll do some homework as well.

My guess is SOL..

Would say the same for 95% of Thai workers.. Perhaps the odd gov employee has a scheme for pensions etc but not many..

Thats a pure and total guess based on what I see and feel.. No real knowledge..

I guess there is no big social security or health system. If you are not doing an insurance by yourself ! As this man worked for the goverment maybe he gets a small pension!

I found this site that gives some information about the benefits. Seems there is a voluntary social security system set in place for elderly and disabled people, provided they are participating in it. This looks similar to an insurance scheme. It falls under the jurisdiction of the ministry of labor in thailand their website is here.
