Uncanny Thai abilities
Thai people have many uncanny abilities I'm sure, but the one that simply amazes me is their ability to forecast rain. Not just whether it will rain or not, but when (i.e. in about 20 minutes) and for how long it will last.
Since Jan 1, on Patong Beach, it has rained twice so far. One was an all day event, and the other was a 20 minute flash storm (today). Both times, I asked the basic questions above to a Thai (one was my landlady, and the other was a motorbike taxi driver). They were both spot on in their forecasts... I have noticed this as well in the past, and have asked several how they do it. The typical answer: feel and smell of the air. I was wondering if anyone else has noticed this and/or other uncanny abilities that Thai people have.

Just a matter of living here for a while. You can feel the temp drop and a slight chill in the air before it rains. The air is a little cleaner smelling. Then the type of clouds and how it is raining gives you a feel for how long and hard it will rain for.
But the real reason is thai people are solar powered. They get sleepy when it is about to rain and start looking for a comfortable place to nap. More sleepy = rain longer. If it rains late afternoon into the early evening, forget about the bars as the girls are down for the night.

Not quite the line your taking but I am always stunned by thier ability to sleep anywhere at any time.. Like right out on the side of a busy street in front of thier shop.. Grown man will just lie down in the middle of the day and pass straight out.

Yea as LIL said, its just local knowledge, even I was living there you could just look at the sky and tell for yourself. Ask my msses if its going to rain, and she'll just say "Do you think so"

Another along the lines of food... Thais are very adept with eating utencils, and getting the right combination and right amount of food ingredients onto their spoons (i.e. rice, pork, basil leaves, sauce and chilis) to make each bite tasty...

Funny thing is, they never seem to eat as much, or of the same high quality when they pop out at night to buy their own food....!!!

The ability to "present" things. Must tie in a little with the face thing. Bangkok was a wonder to see during Christmas/New Year's. The buildings being nicely lit up and decorated, trees lit, parks that were spotless and well manicured.
The office girls dressed to the nines. Plates of food that are picture perfect. I purchased a DVD for a friend's daughter's 4th birthday on the day before Christmas, and the cashier at Robinson's took 20 minutes to wrap it up, with the bows and card, perfectly taped...

The most obvious, always smiling. Pop over to a near by country and you will see the difference right away.

Very true about the face thing - This snake charmer man (his title - we thought he was just plain nuts) was doing some crazy show to a few falangsd one day, near this bar, and this 3 maybe 4 foot cobra decided it was going to have a spot of lunch - I know 3 or 4 foot is not huge for these snakes - but in my not really giving a f*ck about size, when I know they all carry the same type of venom, attitude - it was big enough for me.
So the snake spins round on this guy and sinks it's fangs straight into his forearm - we could see the blood seeping from around the mouth ot the thing and clearly see the guys skin being squeezed by this thing. His first reaction, infront of an almost stunned audience was of mild upset, that his pet killer had embarrassed him by doing such a thing in the first place, before then going on to hold his arm up with the snake hanging off and smiling at everyone, offering them a photo opportunity. After the show was over, we caught a glimpse of him rubbing something into his arm and cutting bits of skin away. Next day he stayed in his house and the day after that he sent that snake back to wherever he had bought it. Now I'm guessing these sort of guys have built up some kind of immunity to these things over the years, but nevertheless, at the tme of this bite, his eyes gave away the sheer panic in his mind - but still he kept of smiling and in true Broadway style, he kept the show going....!
