The Jatukam Ramathep craze
Thais are absolutely mad about this now.
 It is like the new gold. People spending 8,000 baht or more trying to get a certain model. Putting fare too much stock into this. Seems to me it isn't a faith thing but more into the voodoo side of things. I've seen some guys walking around with 5 of these around their neck. I was given one by a friend. Animism - superstition - hype .... I'm finding it all a bit bizzare and amusing .... it sometimes does look like 70's Medalian Man is back!

I find it annoying silly superstition.. But thats just me.
As for 8k baht.. They can be 800k or so for the uber collectables.. My housemates GF is from Nakon, where many of the more collectable ones seem to come from.. She was showing one today that her and her sister has from before the craze, claims it was bought for 1500 baht and worth 59k now.. How she gets 59k I dont know. Says her old man has one worth over 500k baht !! We had the workmen in the hosue a month or so back.. Of course manual and building workers is the kind that really going for this big style.. As the manager brings one group in as a way of ice breaker and easy conversation starter one group starts asking about the other groups amulets and they are all deep in discussion.. My little brother looks up and goes "you see, this one protects from bullets, this one gives power.. Shame none of em have got one for bloody plastering innit ??" crack up moment.

I read there is a place in Phuket Town with experts that will do a proper valuation. Perhaps they also act as a marketplace.
Seems like it is also a little bit like gambling. Also they think it doubles up as an investment. Of course bullet protection and all the rest.

Ohh I saw an ohh so funny farang gone mad the other day..
Waiting at an out of town car wash.. This Vigo pickup comes in.. All rude boy'ed up, bodykit, big shiny alloys, low profile sport tyres (must have a rough noisy ride) silly little LED lights all over it, all the nasty cheap thai style boy'ed up 'upgrades'.. Out of it gets this farang, I wont comment on his physical but he was wearing about 10 baht of gold, fat thai neck chain and wrist bracelets, plus a gold encased jatukahm about 6 inches across.. Just a serious tasteless overcompensating try hard. Sometimes when you see the amulet loving farangs I have to stifle a giggle. I too have one I was given way back before this sudden enthusiasm, its a nice small size, in a silver style shell, I dont imagine it is worth much if anything (It was given to me by someone with almost no money) but it was genuinely given with good feeling, which to me is all the more important. But as I dont wear jewellery I dont carry it. I cant put it with my keys as they go in my trouser pockets (or even might get sat on) and the GF says I shouldnt hang it in the car as it will add to the risk of broken windows snatch and grab (lucky way to acquire a Buddha if ever I heard one !!) so it sits unused.

My wife is from NST.
My BiL sent one of these monstrosities to me about 18 months ago. Nice gesture, absolutely shocking looking thing. She said I should wear it when I visit NST, just to be nice. Haven't been since! Farangs who wear them (I've seen a couple) are, quite frankly, idiots. Even several Thai's I work with have made sarcastic comments when walking past someone wearing them.

I was looking at that coming down the highway this afternoon. It's difficult to read from ground level, but i said to my driver it looked like an amulet.
