After my frist trip to LOS I have had an interest in the Thai culture and how it is the people are the way they are. In searching I ran into a fairly popular text that gives a pretty good introduction to Buddhism. It did clear up a few things for me, since I knew very little about it. It is titled Good Question, Good Answer and is written by Bhikkhu Shravasti Dhammika. You can find it here:

I'm not sure how much of this was directly reflected by the people I met in Thailand, they seemed to be a bit more religious about the whole thing than this author made it sound. Like building things for Buddha and being rewarded by luck as a result. This text made it sound more like a philosophy to be at peace with things rather than a faith for rewards.
