The breakfast thread
I thought it might be a good idea to start a thread about ordering breakfast in Thai.I know some of us don't get up early enough to partake, but for those that do ,what would you order and how would you say it in Thai?
I posted this in another thread, pieced together from a book.Maybe we can tear it down and rebuild it or throw it out and start from scratch.
Kaw kai dow mou bacon kanompang taa neui kafae ron sai nom nam pol mai
May I have fried eggs fried bacon toast with butter hot coffee with milk fruit juice
Yea,It ain't pretty.Thats why I'm here.
Some questions:kai and khai how do I pronounce them differently since it's very hard to soak up a chicken with a piece of toast.
There seems to be more than one word for fried.Which is the most common or does it depend on what's being cooked?
Do the Thai use "and" between items when ordering?
Kafae ron sai nom Mmmm I thought I was ordering hot coffee with milk but isn't that nom sod? What would sugar be?
And of course, what is the most polite way to order.
Looking forward to discussion about the most important meal of the day.

Thank god for menus with pictures of each meal on them. My language skills are really bad and it's just like the Carl's Jr. hamburger chain commercial in the US.
Has a guy in a supermarket looking at the meat section, picks up a package of hamburger, and pokes at the plastic wrapping with a confused look on his face and puts the package back.
The commercial then says "without us, some guys would starve". Pretty funny.
I can cook but just can't get the languages down. Know some french, spanish, tagolog, fijian, hebrew, thai(now, due to the forum) and others but don't ask me to carry on a conversation.

The arrival of decent coffee has solved my breakfast conundrum completely, anyone remember the black, tar-like poison they used to peddle with powdered milk?
A latte for me please, which I guess is the same word the world over, and I don't need to know the word for sugar 'cos I don't use it. Sorted.

Breakfast
I just order in English and hope there's someone that works there that knows what I'm talking about. I couldn't order anything in Thai if they put a gun to my head. Actually, I kind of like the breakfast buffets. They usually have it all laid out for you, and the girls making the eggs usually know what an omlette is.

Actually, according to me, the Thai word for omelet is....omelet!
When I started learning Thai, feeling very smart, I would look up the Thai word for omelette, and order a "khai jiao." After several times of getting stuck with one of those horrible, greasy, overcooked, hard, flat Thai omelets, that you definitely do not want in your stomach when you have been drinking the night before(if ever!), I finally figured out that if you say it in Thai, you get a Thai omelet, if you say it in English, you get a regular omelet!!
I did also try asking for Khai Jiao Baep Farang(Omelet Farang style). The waitress would just kinda screw up her face funny, look at me very unsure, and ask, "You want omelet, yes?"

Eel is actually pretty good.. the dutch have smoked eels which are a real delicacy IMHO..
Normal unsmoked eel tends to be a darker oily kind of fish.. comparable to makrel I would have to say but with a bit more distinctive / stronger flavour.. Only eaten a couple of types (freshwater) so imagine they could be as varied as fish..

and the understatement of the year award goes to....
Sometimes they do shock you... Example this morning, I ended the night (after a very long story) with a girl from Sharkies.. Bit new and low English but nice enough lass.. Just arrived 2 days ago.. So an hour or so ago I offer to take her home, ok out on the bike.. So where you stay ?? erm Nanai.. Er ok love but this IS Nanai.. Where abouts on Nanai ?? erm.. (no fcuking clue)...
So I ask if she has a address written down... nope.. Any clue at all where she stays.. nope.. cant call her mates cause she has no battery and cant remember her mates number to use my phone..
What am I to do.. I cant just dump her somewhere but shes not my responsibility..
Anyway shes in full Sharkies uniform so I know theres a Sharkies house on Nanai 2.. Figure someone will know the score.. Drive her to the Sharkies house and she starts to recognise the Rd.. Thats where shes staying..
I mean really.. Sweet kid and all, but of she wasnt sitting on a goldmine ?!?!?!

Kai is the word for chicken and is pronounced "gai" (like guy in English). BTW, Ko Samui is actually pronounced Goh Samui, Goh like God without the d at end. Same for Ko Phi Phi.
Khai means egg. H after K means it sounds like a K. Otherwise, K sounds like G, unless it is at the end of a word, in which case, it sounds like K again.
Pad means stir-fried. Tot means fried.
I don't think they usually say "and" in between, but it's probably ok to. The word for "and" is "lae" (sounds like English word "lad" without the d at the end). But when they are talking fast, it sounds more like la. Or you can add "duai" at the end, which more or less means "also" and sounds a bit like "dewey." Or sometimes "laew" means "and", especially if it is used with goh, as in "laew goh," which means then or "and then." "Laew" sound like lad but remove the d at the end and replace it with "o", then say it fast and high-pitched.
Nom sod means fresh milk(as opposed to condensed milk or powdered milk). The word for sugar is "nam taan."
When ordering it is OK to say "Ao" then what you want, which means "I want" whatever, or "I get" whatever. Or you can say "Khoh" then what you want, which means "May I have," whatever. Khoh(sounds like caw) is a bit more polite. Ao sounds like "Ou" as in ouch!

Wow ,I could never eat this! You see...............I don't like garlic. One of my goals this time around is to try some kind of insect,I'm wondering if the Thai have a preferance.Grasshopper, grub,Praying mantis.Does anyone know what kind the Issan girls prefer, given a choice?
When I saw the number of responses to my thread,I thought wow I'm going to learn a lot of ways to order breakfast in Thai.I had to chuckle when I saw the main response was Don't! or Get someone else to do it!555555555.Now that's thinking outside the box! for honesty.
Thanks Jaybee for those explanations.I have no dillusions about speaking great(or even good)thai, but it's always fun for me to add a few new words and phrases each trip. And of course it helps if I'm actually pronouncing them right!

when ordering food in a foriegn language you definitely do not want to mispronounce the word that you have learned. You never know what you might end up with.
