IP Addresses

How do you trace an IP address? Is it like a 'dialling code' system, different numbers for each country?

And what about hiding them? How do people hide an IP address? I can see why they would want to, but not how it can be done. Or maybe this is not a smart question on a public forum?

something like that - there are plenty of IP tracking systems on the net. For instance if I wanyt to track an email I use:-
http://arul.telenet-systems.com

If you want to hide your IP address you can use a proxy server or an anonymizer.

late but maybe interesting:)

For email testing, as well as other things..

http://www.stayinvisible.com/index.pl/test_your_email

The different whois tools available on the net can tell a lot about a ip
http://www.arin.net/whois/ for example, there are others too, just a matter of choosing the right one..I wrote one in perl long ago that I used one a website of mine to do Ping, Lookup, Trace and whois

There are also many tools available that hackers and security experts use to trace an ip..http://www.tialsoft.com/mnettrace/ is one but I had a few better back in the day

The most common way to hide your ip addy would be using an anon proxy or chain several together, there are software that can do that like proxyrama or one could use one anon ip configured in browser and launch browser through sockscap using a socks proxy there, socks proxy is anon but hard to come by.

There are programs that will allow you to search for anon proxies or even scan for them, although your ISP would probably frown upon that. Guessing that deny.de would be able to provide clues as to what progs that might be. aatools will do in many cases though..
There are also wingates and such but far too technical to consider

So you want to do something semi shady and want to make sure you not get caught... usa an anon http proxy from Iran in Mozilla, launch Mozilla with no cookies, js, activeX and so on through sockscap, which again is sorted with a nice socks proxy from China.
Should provide you with decent security but of course not complete, if you want that you better add a random wifi spot that you'll never use again

Now you're close to secure, still most are brought down because they have this urge to brag about what they've done...Which is why I never do anything, just learn the theory behind it..

Oh I host this tutorial btw, not written by me but pretty good.
http://dingo.letzebuerg.biz/security/

Can also find some fun stuff here http://www.icefortress.com/downloads/
You need a user : pass but I'm afraid you have to find that for yourself, easy js pw protection so not hard to break...

I made it as straight forward as I could
However no need for proxy other then the one your isp probably route you through, unless you want to be invisible or pretend to be from another country...or get around protection schemes used by websites or forums

Ok, I sometimes use proxies and sh1tloads of them, all anon I might add, as I said good to get around protection schemes

A lot of public forums and no so public ones where hiding your ip is discussed, many times you want to do so to get around blocked content or just add a little security online.

Use of an anon proxy would be like if you give out someone else's address to some chick you met on the net for then to observe what showed up, if you did not like what you see you could always walk away and she'd never know...you'd feel alot safer she'd not be knocking on your door
Well at first anyway hehe

yeah but..
They switched from using public servers to using their private servers, thus leaving you no control over the proxy you use, I suspect if FBI or any agency would knock on their door logs would be handed out pretty fast....and they do keep logs
I've no idea how many proxy servers they actually have, nor where they are located but it would provide some security from dishonest webmasters etc but absolutely none if you do something you're not supposed to do
I also suspect it only affects your surfing and not other apps as news agents, ftp, telnet and a few other shady tools for other purposes, however I have not checked

I'd rather use a free alternative like proxomitron which will let you use your own proxies and design your own webfilters, too bad it's creator have stopped supporting that tool

Send a message via ICQ to Nicke
I use the public whois databases provided by those who manage IP adresses, the most common ones is www.ripe.net (europe), www.arin.net (US), www.apnic.net (Asia Pacific) and there is some more for Africa and alike.

Anyone tried JAP? Seems to work fine for me, but slow, as it is allegedly routed through several servers.

The popular Java Anonymous Proxy (JAP), used to anonymise one's
comings and goings across the Internet, has been back-doored by
court order. The service is currently logging access attempts to
a particular, and unnamed, Web site and reporting the IP addys of
those who attempt to contact it to the German police. We know this
because the JAP operators immediately warned users that their IP
traffic might be going straight to Big Brother, right? Wrong. After
taking the service down for a few days with the explanation that
the interruption was "due to a hardware failure", the operators
then required users to install an "upgraded version" (ie. a
back-doored version) of the app to continue using the service.
