US Navy is back
with 3 ships anchored at Patong beach.

H.M. King Bhumibol
Adulyadej, the world's longest reigning monarch, is well beloved
and deeply respected by all Thais, old and young. The occasion of
His Majesty's royal birthday provides loyal subjects with the opportunity
to express their reverence. All over the country, buildings and
homes are elaborately decorated and the area around the Grand Palace
is spectacularly illuminated.
The police in
Patong announced they will begin to be strict regarding traffic
rules and laws; wear helmet (both passengers?), valid tax signs
and driver licenses.
Lotus arrived
to Phuket almost exactly 2 years ago and now it is time for Big
C to open their super store and compete with Lotus. They also have
Bowling.

They anchored
at Patong Beach, not that many sailors thought. (I was surprised,
I thought they were busy with the taleban/afganistan conflict)
Visitor arrivals
at Bangkok airport totalled 491,186 in October 2001, a decline of
9.12% over October 2000.
In September 2001, Thailand welcomed 729,141 international visitor
arrivals, a slight decline of 0.81%.
European visitors totalled 137,434 in September 2001, an increase
of 11.48% over September 2000. Two major markets were the UK (35,340
or up 7.65%) and Germany (25,032 or up 17.86%).

The new prices
after the hike will be (oneway ticket):
Phuket - Bangkok: 2,625 Baht
Phuket - Hat Yai: 1,180 Baht
Phuket - Trang: 790 Baht
Phuket - Narathiwat: 1,605 Baht
Malaysia Airlines
has canceled its regular thrice-weekly Phuket-Penang service, according
to Phuket Gazette. This was a popular route for people who wanted
to apply or renew their visa at the Thai embassy in Penang. In fact,
I did my last trip only 4 weeks ago and I paid ~4000 baht (r/t)
for the ticket.
This festival
features parades, mini-marathon, takraw contest and many shows on
stage (Jazz music, beauty contest, bartender contest, dance shows).
Soi Bangla is closed to traffic and there will be an open-air market
with stalls.
Another new entertainment is introduced in
Patong; another way of Bungee called Crazy Ball can be found at
Expat hotel on Soi Sunset. I will add picture later.
Public holiday; This day honours King Chulalongkorn
or King Rama
V (1868-1910), one of Thailand's most revered monarch. Expect all
government offices and Thai embassies abroad to be closed.
Heavy rain during the day caused blackout
for many hours and water up to 1 meter deep on the roads in Patong.
Strange because the roads have been improved to get rid of this
problem during the last few months.
New entertainment veneues in Patong, now
you can play Bowling and Bungy Jump in Patong.
Held each year
to venerate the river spirits with gifts of Krathongs. Made of banana
leaves, and decorated with incense and candles, thousands of these
beautiful boats light up the night as they float down rivers and
canals, and across lakes and oceans, on the night of the full moon.
Vegetarian food is eaten by participants
and they wear white clothes. Expect to see people who perform self-tortue
and a lot of firecrackers.
Ead and his band, Carabao, will have a concert
at a pub close to Safari Pub & Disco. This band is wellknown
for their Beer Chang song. They play thai country style of music.
They are here again, they come from Singapore
so they have no money left to spend on beer and girls ;)
Today every bar and discoteque had to close
at 02:00 am, we are back to the strict closing time we had before.
I visited Bangkok last week and they had to close at 01:00 am now.
There will be aprox. 1000 sailors in town.
(Big John)
Expect everything to be closed today and
all government
offices to be closed tomorrow.
According to Phuket Gazette;
Pasha and Galaxy will be closed for admitting customers under 20
years of age. Oral a gogo, Rock Hard a gogo and Flash a gogo will
be closed for 15 days for staging lewd shows.
I also heard that The Shark and Banana disco also will be closed,
but later this month.
Updated
They are here again, I don't have any details
but there will be aprox. 2500 soldiers.
I don't have any details about the ships
but there will be aprox. 3000 soldiers and they stay for five days.
Today two ships from US Navy arrived with
aprox. 500 people and another ship from Australia. I've heard they
will stay for 3 days.
The second exhibition take place at Royal
Phuket City Hotel between July 19-22, 11:00 - 20:00.
You can also watch the live web camera, broadcast
every day between 19:00 and 01:00 (GMT+7) Thailand time.
Visit http://www.phuketwatch.com/gitano.htm
Public holidays and the police requested
the bars to close during these days.
What can I say, after the protest 3 weeks
ago the police allowed the bars to close 05:00 (some restrictions
after 04:00) in the morning, since then the closing time have been
shortened every week and now we are back to 03:00 - 03:30 closing
time.
Now you can watch a live camera from Mai
Thai Bar (Soi Eric). Broadcast every day between 21:00 and 01:45
(GMT+7) Thailand time. Note that the PhuketWatch.com (Phuket Live
Camera Network) is still under development and will be launched
in August.
Visit http://www.phuketwatch.com/maithai.htm
All bars in Patong close today to protest
the Ministry of Interiors refusal to exempt Patong from the 2 am
legal closing time.
However, as I reported a few days ago, the police accept 03:00 or
even 03:30 as closing time at the moment.
The police have been very strict last month
about closing time but now it looks like they accept 03:00 as closing
time. Rumours say they will allow 04:00 next week when the scool
starts again.
Tomorrow US Navy will arrive with aprox.
3000 soldiers to Phuket and they come from Singapore, althought
some ships are still in Singapore. They will stay for five days!
Today every bar and discoteque had to close
at 02:00 in the morning and we have been told that the police will
continue this strict and limited opening time. Normal closing time
for Phuket the last year have been at 05:00.
"Here is where tempers (and also fists)
sometimes flare up in all directions because of water-throwing and
body splashing". Be prepared to get wet when celebrating the
new year.
Don't miss Phuket Bike Week with many events
and parties at soccer field, patong beach. For more information,
visit www.phuket-bikeweek.com.
I have been in Patong for one and a half
year and I have never seen Patong flooded like this before. On beach
road and Rat-u-thit road the water reached 20-80 centimeters deep.
Today the police went to the nightlife area
in Patong and looked for underage workers, many people had to show
their I.D. cards. Also some kids working on the streets selling
cigarettes and chew gums had to go the police station. Children
between the ages of 13 and 18 are not allowed to be employed.
