US Navy is back with 3 ships anchored at Patong beach.

H.M. King Bhumibol Adulyadej, the world's longest reigning monarch, is well beloved and deeply respected by all Thais, old and young. The occasion of His Majesty's royal birthday provides loyal subjects with the opportunity to express their reverence. All over the country, buildings and homes are elaborately decorated and the area around the Grand Palace is spectacularly illuminated.

Traffic crackdown, December 1
The police in Patong announced they will begin to be strict regarding traffic rules and laws; wear helmet (both passengers?), valid tax signs and driver licenses.

Grand opening for Big C, November 29
Lotus arrived to Phuket almost exactly 2 years ago and now it is time for Big C to open their super store and compete with Lotus. They also have Bowling.

They anchored at Patong Beach, not that many sailors thought. (I was surprised, I thought they were busy with the taleban/afganistan conflict)

Visitor arrivals to Thailand, November 14
Visitor arrivals at Bangkok airport totalled 491,186 in October 2001, a decline of 9.12% over October 2000.
In September 2001, Thailand welcomed 729,141 international visitor arrivals, a slight decline of 0.81%.
European visitors totalled 137,434 in September 2001, an increase of 11.48% over September 2000. Two major markets were the UK (35,340 or up 7.65%) and Germany (25,032 or up 17.86%).

Thai Airways rise the price for domestic flights, Nov 15
The new prices after the hike will be (oneway ticket):
Phuket - Bangkok: 2,625 Baht
Phuket - Hat Yai: 1,180 Baht
Phuket - Trang: 790 Baht
Phuket - Narathiwat: 1,605 Baht

Phuket-Penang flights canceled, November 5
Malaysia Airlines has canceled its regular thrice-weekly Phuket-Penang service, according to Phuket Gazette. This was a popular route for people who wanted to apply or renew their visa at the Thai embassy in Penang. In fact, I did my last trip only 4 weeks ago and I paid ~4000 baht (r/t) for the ticket.

Patong Carnival, November 1
This festival features parades, mini-marathon, takraw contest and many shows on stage (Jazz music, beauty contest, bartender contest, dance shows). Soi Bangla is closed to traffic and there will be an open-air market with stalls.

Crazy Ball, October 23
Another new entertainment is introduced in Patong; another way of Bungee called Crazy Ball can be found at Expat hotel on Soi Sunset. I will add picture later.

Chulalongkorn day (King V), October 23
Public holiday; This day honours King Chulalongkorn or King Rama
V (1868-1910), one of Thailand's most revered monarch. Expect all government offices and Thai embassies abroad to be closed.

Patong flooded, October 16
Heavy rain during the day caused blackout for many hours and water up to 1 meter deep on the roads in Patong. Strange because the roads have been improved to get rid of this problem during the last few months.

Rock 'n' Bowl and Patong Bungy World, October 12
New entertainment veneues in Patong, now you can play Bowling and Bungy Jump in Patong.

Loy Krathong Festival, October 31
Held each year to venerate the river spirits with gifts of Krathongs. Made of banana leaves, and decorated with incense and candles, thousands of these beautiful boats light up the night as they float down rivers and canals, and across lakes and oceans, on the night of the full moon.

Vegetarian Festival, October 17-25
Vegetarian food is eaten by participants and they wear white clothes. Expect to see people who perform self-tortue and a lot of firecrackers.

Carabao concert, September 16
Ead and his band, Carabao, will have a concert at a pub close to Safari Pub & Disco. This band is wellknown for their Beer Chang song. They play thai country style of music.

US Navy, August 28
They are here again, they come from Singapore so they have no money left to spend on beer and girls ;)

Strict closing time, 02:00 am, August 27
Today every bar and discoteque had to close at 02:00 am, we are back to the strict closing time we had before. I visited Bangkok last week and they had to close at 01:00 am now.

Australian Navy, August 26
There will be aprox. 1000 sailors in town. (Big John)

The Queen's Birthday, August 12
Expect everything to be closed today and all government
offices to be closed tomorrow.

Bars will be temporary closed, August 2.
According to Phuket Gazette;
Pasha and Galaxy will be closed for admitting customers under 20 years of age. Oral a gogo, Rock Hard a gogo and Flash a gogo will be closed for 15 days for staging lewd shows.

I also heard that The Shark and Banana disco also will be closed, but later this month.

Us Navy, August 11 - August 16. Updated
They are here again, I don't have any details but there will be aprox. 2500 soldiers.

Us Navy, August 1 - August 5.
I don't have any details about the ships but there will be aprox. 3000 soldiers and they stay for five days.

Us Navy, July 20.
Today two ships from US Navy arrived with aprox. 500 people and another ship from Australia. I've heard they will stay for 3 days.

Phuket Food & Hotel Exhibition 2001, July 19-22.
The second exhibition take place at Royal Phuket City Hotel between July 19-22, 11:00 - 20:00.

Update on closing time, June 7.
What can I say, after the protest 3 weeks ago the police allowed the bars to close 05:00 (some restrictions after 04:00) in the morning, since then the closing time have been shortened every week and now we are back to 03:00 - 03:30 closing time.

Patong bars protest, May 16.
All bars in Patong close today to protest the Ministry of Interiors refusal to exempt Patong from the 2 am legal closing time.
However, as I reported a few days ago, the police accept 03:00 or even 03:30 as closing time at the moment.

Update on closing time, May 12.
The police have been very strict last month about closing time but now it looks like they accept 03:00 as closing time. Rumours say they will allow 04:00 next week when the scool starts again.

US Navy, April 21.
Tomorrow US Navy will arrive with aprox. 3000 soldiers to Phuket and they come from Singapore, althought some ships are still in Singapore. They will stay for five days!

New closing time for nightlife scene, April 10.
Today every bar and discoteque had to close at 02:00 in the morning and we have been told that the police will continue this strict and limited opening time. Normal closing time for Phuket the last year have been at 05:00.

Songkran (Thai New Year), April 13-16.
"Here is where tempers (and also fists) sometimes flare up in all directions because of water-throwing and body splashing". Be prepared to get wet when celebrating the new year.

Patong flooded, March 23.
I have been in Patong for one and a half year and I have never seen Patong flooded like this before. On beach road and Rat-u-thit road the water reached 20-80 centimeters deep.

Police looked for underage workers, March 22.
Today the police went to the nightlife area in Patong and looked for underage workers, many people had to show their I.D. cards. Also some kids working on the streets selling cigarettes and chew gums had to go the police station. Children between the ages of 13 and 18 are not allowed to be employed.
